2.7 ounces!! Might have to get one just to try it. Not usually a fan of big blades but that kind of weight for the size is pretty amazing. A G10 Para 3 is about 3 ounces! Now throw a K390 blade in this thing and I'd be all over it.
Definitely worth trying out! If you have ever handled the LC200N Pac Salt. It is crazy how light it feels.
Never tried a Pac Salt. The Endura handle just isn't my thing. The Stretch is a favorite though, so the XL version has my attention.
I've always preferred the Stretch to Endura when it comes to handle shapes, but there's no rust proof Stretch. If they make this XL version a Salt someday I might not even keep a Pacific in my rotation any more.

I'm as much interested in a Salt version of the XL as a K390 version. Maybe more interested in the Salt, actually. Would be an excellent backpacking knife!

I've been saying for years if they made a Police Salt I'd ditch the Pacific. While it's my favorite knife that's more or less due to it being the largest Salt currently offered. I have precisely 0 actual Enduras in my collection ;)

I'm really excited about this one. I saw the weight and though this great if you want a longer blade while lightweight backpacking etc. It will probably put my Endura into retirement.

i've always thought the stretch had a better handle too. a stretch salt would be very tempting.

I am thinking $115 to $120 price range like a plain police 4.
No need to speculate on pricing, $112.35 at BladeHQ. I have to say, that's less than I was expecting. And certainly less than I'm expecting the Chief FRN to go for.

And in case anyone wondered what the SE looks like:

...

Man, even the serrations look perfect!!!
Rather shallow as far as i can see, and exactly the right amount of PE towards the tip..

Can´t find anything that is NOT perfect on this model... perhaps that I´d slightly prefer the original Stretch blade shape. but that´s about it and the straight spine not a deal breaker at all..

/ Wonder what this will cost in Europe. US prices are less than I would have expected - another advantage of linerless FRN, I guess...
I like the old blade shape too. Seems like a stronger tip and plenty sharp to pierce material. Similar to the Kapara. Reminds me of a Kephart style blade for outdoor use. My guess was originally the design was for a hunter, so you do not want a pointy tip for field processing. But, like other designs they become popular for EDC and do not nesscesarily stick 100% to the original concept. Which is fine of course, but straight spine is not necessarily important to me. I even like the closed profile of the previous blade shape. It is unique.

Linerless construction without rustproof blade seems to me more of a disadvantage. Would definitely get a Salt version of this design though.

This combination of design, size and weight is going to serve very well for hiking. If this one sells well (always hard to guess), the we will surely see different steel options. I can’t help but think that this one would actually really suit MagnaCut. There, I said it 😁

I say it has great potential, VG10 is a nice start but will wait for a different steel. Looks great . MG2

Comparing the specs of the "regular" Stretch 2 and the XL version shows how very "edge length efficient" the latter is:

- Stretch XL Closed just 6mm longer than the regular Stretch (4.97" vs 4.71") (
- But 13 mm more blade / edge! (Blade: 3.92" vs 3.43")
- And it looks like they should have about the same width - for me not much reason left to NOT go for the XL, especially since it is on top a lot lighter...

(For comparison: A PM2 is closed 11 mm longer than a Para 3, and offers also 11 mm more of blade)

I figure the blade of the XL must really fill all of the handle (which I like...), otherwise this could not be possible.

This is even better than with Endura vs Endela (Endura 7 mm longer when closed, but offering 11 mm more edge, 10 mm more blade)

Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Well, go for the SE version... :winking-tongue

In PE VG10 is not bad, but in SE it is actually GREAT! ;)

I would take a stretch JR over a Para 3. Just like I’d take the stretch over the PM2.

The XL is a wicked option for a quasi “backlock military” I like it.

Honestly, if you never had (ffg) VG10 in SE, you should definitely give it a try!

And this knife seems to be a great candidate. As said, the serrations in the pic on page one look perfect (though I am not entirely sure this will be the exact same pattern / depth and amount of scallops the knife will come with in the end. I think sometimes serrations in pics for the catalogue are computer generated just for the pic)

Or the Endura with choil and no finger grooves some are wishing for... (in size it is actually similar to the Endura, so a bit smaller than a Millie - I think the Police is even closer to the Millie, at least on size. Though in looks and overall shape it is the Stretch XL)

The new XL FRN stretch is a LW backpacker's dream; it's got a lot of edge for its weight. See:

Since edge and blade length are highly correlated, the Stretch XL looks very efficient for its blade:weight ratio also:

Thanks for the graph!

Yes, amazing!
And this is EDGE, not blade - so people who like that get a choil on top too!

I always say that for me the Stretch 1 (disco´ed) is a "masterpiece among Sals masterpieces" - but I am 100 % certain already the Stretch XL is too!! :smiling-cheeks

I’m probably going to buy one, but two small bummers for me:

1) I really hoped they launch with a steel other than VG-10. I like VG-10, but not as much as I like K390.
2) The lack of liners is going to make aftermarket scales a little harder I think.

To illustrate the point on both counts: I don’t think I’ve carried my VG-10 FRN Stretch once since I put together my K390 + Micarta Stretch.

Edit: to be really clear, I am stoked on this model, and glad to see Spyderco continue to innovate. I just want more Micarta and tool steel.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.
