I wanted to compare the PE leaf blade to the SE and see which I like best for edc, so when I saw them in stock again I jumped. The new PE one arrived yesterday, and it is definitely a CQI version, although it is dated GS (July 2019). The changes I can see (without taking it apart):

-screws and standoffs are black coated
-the g10 inside the scales around the liners is black rather than yellow
-the ridge texturing is different. The black ridges are thicker, and therefore closer together.
In the third picture, you can see that the lockbar tab has been shaped/chamfered a bit.

The liners are noticeably smoother(to my eye) in that picture, aswell.
You're right! Here's a better pic.

Leaf shape, PE is very high on my wish list. I will buy it next year (unless something extremely exciting comes out).

Thanks, Julia. Did your SE suggest a PE would be better the second time around?

Hey there,

On the CQI ones, does the blade drop open or closed when depressing the comp lock?

Thanks!

Tagging off this question, what necessitated the CQI on the Caribbean?

my understanding is that they were refining some things to increase corrosion resistance. the hardware is coated now, so there must have been some issue with the hardware and blade steel not reacting well together, although i don’t remember seeing anyone complain about that here.

It doesn't have a bushing like the CQI sage 5 so the action isn't as drop shutty.

Yeah, neither my pre- or post-CQI models will freely drop shut, but they're easy to swing shut. The older one even more so since it's more broken in. I have no complaints about the action on either.

It's maybe a bit more than some guys will accept, but I've been polishing my pivots now for the last dozen or so knives I've bought and mine is smooth as silk and drops like a pendulum. It would be even better with a bushing pivot like the Military has but polishing it is at least a big improvement. I do sorta prefer to initiate the closing action with a little wrist flick but I want it to drop shut after that, and it's pretty easy to dial into that spot now.

just got my se sheepsfoot caribbean in the mail and it's not a cqi version. that's pretty disappointing since i waited for a long time for the cqi to happen and for the knife to be restocked. i even ordered straight from the sfo to be sure it was a new version.

now that i finally have one in hand, i will say i like it a lot more than i thought i would. the bumble bee pattern isn't as bad in person and neither are the other things that bothered me about the design. it's all around better than i expected and super comfortable in hand, but i'm still disappointed about the non-cqi and waiting so long for nothing. also, my last serration is not ground properly. it's like it just comes to an abrupt stop before the end of the scallop. :\

Honestly, you will probably never notice a difference between the original and the CQI. I put my Caribbean through **** and it barely had any corrosion after a full year of zero maintenance(aside from the occasional rinse).

The scales are a lot softer in color in person and I will maintain that it has the best handle shape and grip pattern of any Spyderco in production.

Glad you like it! :)

Yup, my non CQI SE Sheepfoot came from the SFO as well, after waiting what seemed like a year for it to come back in stock. I mentioned it in this thread and sent mine back.
