Hi SEF,

I know of no blade steels made in Italy. The Pattada would be typical of a machined handle, good blade steel and a lock (in this case a Walker Linerlock).

Any chance of a higher end product coming out of China from spyderco?

It is what it is. I have certainly bought fewer knives as prices have gone up, but that's also partly because I consider myself more of a connoisseur than a collector. I no longer feel the need to "catch 'em all", but for the ones I really like, an extra $20 or whatever isn't going to sway my decision that much as long as I can count on having the same or better quality as I'm used to getting from the Spyderco brand. If the quality and variety went down, then I'd lose interest a lot more quickly than with the yearly price hikes.

I also appreciate that Spyderco continues to maintain diversity by manufacturing in various countries for various reasons rather than just taking the easy way out and making everything in the cheapest possible factory and considering profit margin above all other factors such as ethics, quality, and loyalty/history, which are actually some of the more important aspects of Spyderco to me personally.

Hi Dave,

I guess it depends on what you call "higher end"? We made the Polestar and Alcyone with higher end blade steel. Good designs and good quality. But more expensive. You were one of the first to say they shouldn't be in the affordable category, and certainly sales reflect your comment. So it's probably doubtful.

I think the Alcyone and Polestar land squarely in the mid range category. A high end Chinese knife would sport at least S35VN, probably have the popular compression lock, possibly be a flipper, and be closer to $100 than $50. In other words, “all in” on China. Obviously, easier said than done.

I think the issue there is there isn’t a unique attribute they bring and price isn’t low enough to over come that-
At the time the ambitious and pals where released there wasn’t really anything like it,
But I guess Bd1 wasn’t enough of a jump up over 8cr..
I’m still hoping to pickup an alcyone but because there isn’t that one thing it brings it gets bumped by random flavours of the month, personally I’m quite sure I’d prefer it over the ambitious and what not.

I really doubt you're going to see them send more American steel into China any time soon.

Lots of S35VN knives coming out of China these days. I’m not hung up on that steel (CTS-XHP is great), just throwing that out as a lower bound.

Living in the US, the solution that works best for me is more Golden knives. I realize that doesn't work for everyone. I'd like to see more affordable sprints like the cruwear para3 and the upcoming red manix. Although that doesn't mean I wont spend money on a steel or material that's speacial. I've just had to buy less this year, than previous years, and probably less next year. That's not the fault of Spyderco, inflation is what it is, the problem is my paychecks haven't really increased that much (although I'm looking to remedy that soon by switching jobs).

i can’t help but wonder if i should use my Christmas money now to get a yojimbo before the prices go up, or if i should hold out and wait for a dlc version that we all keep asking for. or even better... a dlc salt version.

sal...? mike...? will i die holding my breath for a stealthy salt self defense knife?

I accept that knives like everything else go up in price. I continue to look at each and see what it's worth to me to decide if I want to buy it or not. Not all make it. I'm a lot harder grader now than I used to since I retired but it doesn't change the concept. Some I will get at twice the price if I have to.

And, I don't care if it's made of diamond and platinum. I'm not paying $100 for a knife from PRC.

Out of curiosity is there a specific reason or is it just racial prejudice?

based on “prc” i’d guess it was political rather than racial. no one really gets warm fuzzies about sending money to a country like china, but a lot of people are okay with it because they like the product or the savings. to each their own.

Political I can understand-however I’m happier when foreign owned companies with some iota of morality run and manage factories in China, TBH I can’t say I’m particularly thrilled with the politics of many countries however this forum may not be the place for that discussion..

I’m not-
I can see how it reads that way but rest assured that’s not the intent-
I’m genuinely curious what specifically it is about PRC you object to- or if it is just that you object to the Chinese generally, unfortunately when Chinese made knives comes up that’s a disappointingly common comment (obviously in less polite phrasing)

Wow. I blame the media for everyone immediately trying to label everything "racist" these days.
