Maxamet or S110V?
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
For me corrosion resistance is important. I don't have anything in Maxamet, but my experience with M4 tells me corrosion will be an issue (various reports say M4 is perhaps a bit more corrosion resistant than Maxamet with a few exceptions). It's not just the rust that shows up due to sweat condensation on the blade in my pocket (humid here in the summer). Sometimes the fine edge is lost due to corrosion rather than use. I go to use it and find the very fine edge is not quite so fine. That is more important to me than rust spots. If I only cut dry material it is not an issue, but if I use it clearing brush and vines I need to clean it soon and dry it or the green plant material results in a little dulling while it sits in my pocket. This is the only reason I have held off on getting any Maxamet. Who knows, I may yet try it.
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
Ah yeah, edge degradation due to corrosion while sitting unused in unfavorable environment, the achilles heel of low cr steels, a valid concern.
This is one reason there's always an eze-lap coarse credit card size sharpener always with me.

Re: Maxamet or S110V?
I keep a double stuff in my briefcase and a DMT Diafold in my glove box, and a full arsenal of sharpening gear at home, so I am never far from the ability to touch up the edge. That is not an issue at all.
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
Since corrosion has already been brought up can I patina the Maxamet with vinegar? Does it have the phospher bronze washers and will the vinegar harm them? I'm also trying to decide between the S110V and Maxamet but if I can't force a patina them I might just have to go with the S110V Blurple.

Thanks Midnightrider. I think my luck may have run out.Midnightrider wrote:My goto shop doesn't have the Manix in Maxamet.. I have been watching for months. I purchased my Manix 2 LW Maxamet from Cutlery Shoppe. When I thought to purchase the Manix 2 with S110V blade that model was out of stock at C.S., so I ordered it from GP Knives. However, GP Knives shows the Manix 2 LW in Maxamet as Out of Stock. If I return the S110V Manix 2 to GP Knives I have nothing to order as an Exchange, because the Maxamet that I want to exchange for is Out of Stock. I may well be stuck with the S110V Manix 2 unless I want to pay the 15% Restocking Fee plus the $10.00 shipping charges. As I say,I think my luck has run out.
It is looking like I am the proud owner of a Manix 2 in S110V. But it's okay. It's a great knife and a high end stainless blade steel.
Life could be a lot worse. :)
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
I love Maxamet but have run into a bit of a problem with it. Myself! I take it to work (Carpenter / General contractor) and my sweat pits and surface rusts it if I carry it. Pretty bad too also it gets in the pivot area. No matter the oil, silicone, frog lube etc that I use. Could be just my personal body chemistry. Same goes for M4. So I have switched to s30v and now the S110v para 3. It's a shame because I really like Maxamet over everything else.

Re: Maxamet or S110V?
My n5 has a fairly even patina from use, so I'm sure it will darken with vinegar. Which knife are you looking at?mastiff wrote:Since corrosion has already been brought up can I patina the Maxamet with vinegar? I'll be interested in your thoughts after using and sharpening it half a dozen times or so.El Gato wrote:[It is looking like I am the proud owner of a Manix 2 in S110V. But it's okay. It's a great knife and a high end stainless blade steel.

The Manix 2 LW. I don't want to ruin the washers as I like a nice even patina and taking apart the Manix LWs is a pain. I was thinking of just letting it sit in the vinegar for a bit but then remembered the bronze washers and worried they might be damaged.jpm2 wrote:My n5 has a fairly even patina from use, so I'm sure it will darken with vinegar. Re: Maxamet or S110V?
I have lived my whole life (in Hawaii) with sweaty palms, which means I gravitate to stainless steels. I sold most of my M4 and all my Cruwear Spydies because I was too afraid to use them and get them rusty. Heck, I have rust spots on my S110V Spydies, mostly in the jimping areas. So unfortunately, no Maxamet for me

Re: Maxamet or S110V?
 I must be the luckiest thing on earth!! I contacted GP Knives, who responded promptly, and not only offered me a complete refund on the Manix 2 S110V knife, but will send me an email notification when the Manix 2 LW with Maxamet blade is again in stock. All I now need to do is return the S110V knife and wait for the Maxamet.jpm2 wrote:I'll be interested in your thoughts after using and sharpening it half a dozen times or so.El Gato wrote:[It is looking like I am the proud owner of a Manix 2 in S110V. GP Knives made this easy and completely trouble/worry free for me in every way possible. For me, GP Knives Customer Service goes beyond expectations, and because of the way they have treated me they are now my go to source for knives.
I thought they deserved this posting. :)
I apologize for not being able to comment on sharpening experience with the S110V, but life just got even better today!!
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
I've also received top notch customer service from GP Knives.

I plan to pick up an s110v blade at some point. Seems to be talk of recently updated heat treats with the newer blades performing better, it has me curious. Still waiting to see which models are coming out with it.
Re: Maxamet or S110V?
Come on, Jack! No way you can tell the difference between these two in random usage. Both are extremely, extremely, e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y hard to grind!

It’s aliiiiiiiiiiiiive!

Re: Maxamet or S110V?
Depends how familiar you are with both. There is definitely a noticeable difference between the two. They feel completely different on the stones. Maxamet just feels harder on the stones and has less burr formation, which makes it so nice to sharpen.
