The only steel I've had from Spyderco that I outright did not like was 154CM, despite all the raves it gets. That steel and I just didn't mesh well at all. The rest I like for what they are and appreciate their pros and cons. For me it's more about what steel I can get in what model knife more so than just picking steel. Now, if I could get any steel in any knife, I would surely have some strong preferences, and those would be of the higher carbon, higher wear resistance type like S90/110V, 204P, etc. I generally don't need high toughness so I like the ones that hold a working edge for stupid amounts of time.
I like VG-10, or rather, most of my favorite Spydercos are Japanese models which were either only ever available in VG-10, or only ever available in either VG-10 or in steels I don't really like, namely ZDP-189 and Super Blue.

WOW!! And here I thought I was the only one who did not care for ZDP/SB!! And... VG-10 is on top of the list also as a favorite!! John :)

Not all who wander are lost!!!
Of all the paths you take in life...
Make sure some of them are Dirt!!!
M4.
Actually, I really don't know enough to say.
But, from what I've used, I pretty much like them all.
Especially M4, 10V,S110V, VG10, 204p,S30V
They're all very sharp and nice imo :)
So far I have used GIN-1, VG-10, S30V, Cruwear, S90V, S110V, Super Blue, and K390... and I don't have a clue!
It makes me feel like a dolt sometimes, but the only practical differences I've observed in use so far are in geometry and ease of sharpening (moreso in terms of manual grinding and reprofiling than apexing on a factory bevel). My uses are typically light and I haven't tried to do any formal comparisons. I sure appreciate the variety of options though and enjoy having lots of different steels in my collection to try out. Time will tell I guess.
I have used alt if their xhp and s30v. Both are great. I've also used most the other higher end steels. They are really great too. Harder to sharpen though.
One thing I'll say about ZDP-189 is I do seem to have to try extra hard or pay more attention when sharpening it to get the good, clean, crisp edge. The first ZDP-189 knife I got was impossible for me to sharpen. I remember getting it and it was SO SHARP I ordered a ZDP Stretch within a few days. When I wanted to try to sharpen the ZDP (don't remember what knife???) I just couldn't get it even close to being sharp. Forget about getting it really sharp like it came. I had the same problem with the Stretch. I had to deal with this problem for about a year I think. I remember there were a few other people here on the forum just starting to learn to sharpen like I was who were having trouble only with ZDP. But most of the people who had much more experience sharpening than I did said they didn't have problems other than it took a little more time. I have sharpened my pocket knives all my life but never with the better steels nor did I have high expectations or skill. Now I can get ZDP-189 as sharp as anything else but most are easy to sharpen. I'm not talking about ZDP taking more time or more strokes because it's harder. It seems like it takes more accuracy to get the hair whittling edge that is easier to get on VG-10, S30V, XHP and any other steel I've sharpened so far. I don't know why I have this problem. I've whittled it down to two possibilities. Either it's because of the high rockwell hardness OR I've put some sort of psychological block when sharpening it. I FIRMLY, FIRMLY, FIRMLY believe our attitude when doing almost anything has as much effect on the results as our skill or abilities do.
I've put up sort of a personal passing/failing standard regarding sharpening skill. If you can get everything razor sharp but not ZDP you are a very good knife sharpener. Once you can consistently sharpen ZDP-189 with great results you are above average. OTOH, maybe it's just me (and my attitude) that is the problem. :) This has become a possibility I always consider. :) Why? Because it's the problem more often than I care to admit. :D
