I emailed knife center the other day about the price. This is their reply.
Hi Jack - Yes, that price is correct - this one features the "stepped titanium".
The Chaparral is a great knife. I won't be getting this one though. It's not the amount of money that bothers me. It's the fact the I DON'T HAVE the amount of money. :) If I were financially in the position to get one I would. I assume the price is justified based on the production cost to Spyderco. Based on my opinion of the people at the company I don't think they would make this knife for the same cost as the Chaparral 2, then sell it for twice the amount. I just don't see them doing that.

I guess this "stepped ti" finish is more expensive than "stealth ti" because they have to remove more of that expensive grey material. Millitary fluted titanium maybe had less titanium than the flat one but I'm sure it was more expensive to produce, so it's shocking the same knife with the same materials costs twice. Beautiful knife but I already own a Chaparral 2 and so far don't think about collecting this series.jackknifeh wrote:I emailed knife center the other day about the price. This is their reply.

wow, lucky for me I can get a CF chaparral (a far superior handle material anyway) for less than a third of that...

This is where my thoughts were, as well.gbelleh wrote:I'm hoping Spyderco provided the wrong price, and the $564.95 retail should be $364.95 (which would seem more in line with the $319.95 retail price of the Chaparral 2). Maybe?
I just didn't look up the Chap 2 retail to check my logic...
Thanks, gbelleh!

Has anyone or anyone you know put the knife on pre-order? I looked at it as close as I can on the pc and it really is intricatly engraved. It looks a lot more complicated than the Chaparral 2. That may make it necessary to ask the higher price but I don't know if it would justify paying for it. OTOH, I buy (and I'm sure there are others here :) ) what I want no matter what it is "worth". That word will mean different things to just about everyone. Of course you would have to "want" one that bad to begin with. I would love to have one and I would get one without question if I only had the money. Money is worth nothing by itself. I'd rather have "stuff".

Yeah, I can imagine that the intricate machining of all that Ti is pretty darn expensive, but even if they dropped the price $100 this one just isn't doing it for me... Really, I'm a little surprised that they're making it -- I'm assuming this will be produced in pretty limited quantities; justified or not, I just can't see too many of these moving.

I was surprised to see another titanium handle even if the pattern is different. The Chaparral series is designed to have different handle materials but I guess changing the pattern will be a choice also.
Has anyone heard what handle material (or pattern) will be on the Chaparral 4? :D :D :D Thought I'd be the first to ask. :D People were asking about the Sage5 a couple of months after the Sage4 was released but not BEFORE the release date. :)

There are a lot of options out there for future Chaps. Micarta, jigged bone, ironwood, G10, kirinite, FRN, FRCP, etc. It will be real interesting to see where they take it.jackknifeh wrote:Has anyone heard what handle material (or pattern) will be on the Chaparral 4? :D :D :D Thought I'd be the first to ask. :D People were asking about the Sage5 a couple of months after the Sage4 was released but not BEFORE the release date. :)
