Not really, unless it could be done without cutting depressions in one or both rear bolsters. Otherwise you'd just be swapping one mutilated front bolster for one, or more likely two mutilated rear bolsters.Evil D wrote:You know what would really be cool? Make this Kopa clipless...but design a clip that uses a kind of barrel screw so it attaches to the lanyard hole. That should make most everyone happy.
Any chance of having a Kopa and Dragonfly sprint run?

Both these sprints sound awesome to me, especially the Kopa. I love the design, but besides not being easy to find I don't really wantto spend the money that they are now for the steel you get.

Or maybe burgundy micarta …DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:I think that a clipless Kopa sounds like a good idea!! :D
And a Lava would be nice...I still really want a SS one as I like SS knives. But something in a polished natural Micarta would be really nice.

I'm going to use your other thread with the great knives and pics to "stimulate" our Kopa maker. Good job on those,.

Lava with micarta handle would be great

Excited about the Kopa, I don't have a full set due to the cost, but have 5. the giraffe bone is in my pocket today in fact. I have followed Tony's threads on modding and agree his are a good motivator for the manuafacturer. For Kopa's the wilder the better. I actually prefer to have a clip, just my opinion.
Dragonfly, ZDP with CF scales, sign me up.
I don't know what it is about my Lava, but it has cut me more than all the other knives I own combined. A g10 scale would be ideal but I also like g10 on knives.

Maybe leave some for the rest of us this time around, eh? :Dtonydahose wrote:wow, great news. I am a big fan of the kopas :D , I am going to have to tell Dan from down under about this! So Sal are you going to go with the red quince that was next in line for the scales or are you going to surprise us?
if you need any ideas for scale options, here are a few :D . There are better pics in the link.

I love all my Kopas and the ones Tony did for me are exceptional too :)
I have a penchant for nicely figured woods and the ones that show some depth are even more coveted.
For sprint runs by definition it is structurally the same as the original with really only a change in scales or steel (generally speaking). For it to be viable a sprint should have the need for re-tooling. So whilst I'm also hankering for a Titanium version without a Boye Dent nor a clip. In sure we can expect the Kopa sprint to be exactly the same in structure and design but a special inlay. BUT .... Spyderco and Sal have never ceased to impress and surprise us all.
I'm just hoping there are enough for me to put aside some coin and organise import permits so I can add the sprint to my current collection of 60+ Kopas :p

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing the right front bolster is originally smooth , like the left one, and then milled, drilled, and tapped to accept the clip. If that's the case, then omitting those steps should not require new tooling. Not really a huge deal for me. I have two "user" Kopas that have had their right front bolsters ground down and the screw holes filled in. It's more a case that, with the Kiwi gone, I'm looking for something I'd buy multiples of to have customized.ozspyder wrote:I love all my Kopas and the ones Tony did for me are exceptional too :)

FWIW, Sal has mentioned a reluctance to use micarta due to dimensional stability issues. However, the Persian Sprint was polished red G-10 rather than micarta, so it should be possible.Knifewing wrote:In my earlier post I mentioned G-10, Ti, and textured CF as possible handle materials for a sprint Lava. Then DeathBySnooSnoo mentioned micarta and I can't believe I neglected to add that to the list. How about RED micarta, like the Schempp Persian sprint? After all, we're talking Lava here...

I also can be wrong, but IMHO this is just logical way to machine it. Omitting these steps just will reduce machining time. The Deacon wrote:I could be wrong, but I'm guessing the right front bolster is originally smooth , like the left one, and then milled, drilled, and tapped to accept the clip.
