Noob question: 1095 vs SuperSteels edge holding
If you land is far enough away from ground zero that it's not either wiped out completely or so contaminated that it would be inhabitable, that could be possible depending on what might happen.Fat Goat Forge wrote:As a rural resident who owns livestock and farmland I find it funny that urban dwellers have their bug out bags filled with stuff so they can head for the hills when SHTF. Well dont come here we plan to defend our town if SHTF against the incoming hoards of city dwelling yuppies heading our way with their BOB's full of weapons. Its not likes there is much wilderness near the cities so I figure they are coming to live off my land.
Oh and as a former Infantry Officer I know how to defend my land.
As a former Infantry Officer you know what I am talking about here or should.

I guess a lot of guys don't think that is SHTF scenario. To them that's prolly just cutting cheese behind the fan.Evil D wrote:I mainly just meant if you get lost hiking...that sort of SHTF lol

Getting a flat is already SHTF for me. :)

For what it is worth I suggest building your freehand sharpening skills because you have the motivation. With the right tools and technique you can split hairs, create any edge angle you want, and have a blast with your accomplishments.Ol' KL wrote: I admit I have a fascination with keen edges. I'm not sure that I have all my 1095 blade will give me. I really need to work on my sharpening skill. I imagine a jig or reps are the only way to improve that. I would like to do it free hand. I'm not much of a craftsman, but if I'm going to work on something it might as well be honing. It's easy to practice.
Yeah its really not but you never know. It just depends on how serious you hike and how far out in the wilderness you are when you realize you're lost.chuck_roxas45 wrote:I guess a lot of guys don't think that is SHTF scenario. To them that's prolly just cutting cheese behind the fan.

I hope I never have to survive in a wilderness situation let alone a dystopian society full of mutant bikers. It wouldn't be pretty.
That said the last thing (as Ankerson said) which would be on my mind would be my secondary bevel. It would finding water, shelter, and lowering my standard of the word "food".
Much of the survival we see and understand from TV is wrong as I understand. Calories expended in silly ways (potentially dangerous even). In the movies it's way wrong because after dredging along with a tattered iPod and wicked machete it's unlikely you will run into a religious zealot or Mila Kunis.

If one is among the survivors then as you said the most important things would be shelter, water and food and the process of finding those.Blerv wrote:I hope I never have to survive in a wilderness situation let alone a dystopian society full of mutant bikers. It wouldn't be pretty.

That could vary greatly depending on what actually happened and most wouldn't know what happened on a large scale, so there really isn't an answer to what would need to be done. One wouldn't know what outside is really like, contaminated etc by radiation or other things like chemical or biological issues or how far spread those things really are without the proper equipment. That's not even getting into other things like dangerous people or animals. Also one wouldn't know if their food supply is contaminated either so that is something to think about also along with the water supply.
Wasting energy is the last thing one would want to do though.
