I too would recommend the Moran. Mine is a *fantastic* slicer! Sure it's blade isn't as thick as some of my big "choppers", and I wouldn't try to do any serious "batonning" with it, but I prefer a folding saw, machete, or axe if I need to fell a tree, and my knife is for cutting, and the Moran excels at that.

I think it would do alright with light tapping with a branch to split a little wood, but would not over-do it.

And of course the various Mule series are pretty nice for camping work too, kind of like a smaller Temperance 2.
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)

Another vote for the Endura. If you like the Delica and simply want something bigger, it seems the obvious choice. The Pacific Salt worth mentioning too.

Currently I have an Aqua Salt SE for camp food prep.

Although I do not have one yet, I am looking to get a Moran soon to keep the Aqua company during camping.

Personally, I only take a SAK/ multitool and some kind of chopper or saw when camping/hiking. I never really needed anything more. Ya just have to take smaller bites when processing food. Lol. But what fun is that!? I would suggest either a fixed blade over 4" or maybe an Endura for that task.

The Stretch is prob more expensive mainly on the production plan. The Delica and Endura have been out far longer and likely sell 10 times more (conservative guess).

I find it an excellent folder though! A fixed blade would give spades of security though without moving parts. Not speaking from a safety stance but basic camp chores and cleanup.

If you want a folder, go for the Pacific Salt for easy clean up.

Catcherman or Temp 2

Post by JD Spydo »

This may not be what you want to hear but you might still be able to get one of the best food prep knives Spyderco ever made in my opinion>> and that is the Catcherman model. You might check with the Great Spyder Factory outlet in good ol' Golden Colorado USA because I heard that they might have a few of those special edition USN H-1 Catchermans still available.

Not only is the blade long enough to take on just about any food prep job but it's ideal for all kinds of camp chores>> not to mention what you could do with those fish you're going to catch on your camping trip. On the other hand if you got the coins and could afford the Temperance 2 model then by all means get that bad boy

The best case scenerio is get both of them

When I think of camping and the chores usually involved I think of a fixed blade rather than a folder. I usually take a folder and use for food prep but for cutting down wood, clearing brush and all around camp detail I always go for a fixed blade.

Blasphemy I know but to stay in your price range I won't mention the bushcrafter but for 70 bucks you could get a Becker BK2 that would take whatever you could throw at it.
Sometimes you gotta kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight.

I carry a Delica or Delica sized knife 95% of the time. I do however carry either a FFG Endura or G10 Police if it's going to be a day hike and food will be brought.
The long FFG blade of either works great for the types of snacks we take. I use it to cut cheese, it's long enough to cut the big loafs of Italian type bread and most importantly it's long enough to get to the bottom of a jar of peanut butter and because of the FFG it's easy to clean and it doubles well as a spreading knife.
If I'm actually camping and cooking I have cookware and utensils for that.
The Pac Salt would work nicely as well. But the FFG for cheese and use as a spreading knife are why I chose it. Next time I'll take my Salt and see if it makes any difference. :)
It's nice Spyderco makes so many different kinds of knives for us.

Most paring knives are about 3" and that isn't enough for my typical cooking chores. A useful knife for food prep might be a fillet knife with a blade of 5" or 6".
I don't do much camping, but if I did, I'd probably pack a Fallkniven 6" fillet knife or a similar knife with a shorter blade. For camping, you can't go wrong with an inexpensive boning knife from Victorinox or Forschner. It should do anything you need to do with food prep.
If you want to use a Spyderco folder, and I sure like them, I'd probably want something like a folding fishing knife or a Military.
