Super Size Spyderco?

While I think it'd be nice to have a large knife, if it's larger than my pocket... I don't really know what'd I do with it. A knife in a backpack isn't useful... two birds in a bush is worth one in hand... so two knives in a backpack is worth one in the pocket, at least IMO. If I were to carry a big knife fully exposed.... I'd hate to think of how people will react.
Carry a sharp knife, and life will never be dull
Honestly, I'd be happiest if spyderco would just make a knife that maxed out the Texas legal limit of 5.5 inches. That's as super sized a knife as I would use regularly. I keep hoping that if Mr. Schempp ever gets his ethnic bowie out... it will be that long. :)
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

My Benchmade LFK (5.2" blade, 6.7"closed) and my Cold Steel XXL Voyager (about 7" closed with a 6" blade) fit fine in my jeans pocket and in my Khakis. Unless you wear pants with really small pockets, this should not be a problem. This is an advantage over having a fixed blade, since so don't have to wear a sheath and draw attention to yourself.Minibear453 wrote:While I think it'd be nice to have a large knife, if it's larger than my pocket... The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
That would be really useful for bigger fish. I'm with you.Captron wrote:Eight-ten inch blade Catcherman in H1. Would fit easily in tacklebox compared to eight-twelve inch fixed blades. Any of you guys with me on this?

I understand what you mean, but in your situation your talking about a very specific task.Captron wrote:Eight-ten inch blade Catcherman in H1. Would fit easily in tacklebox compared to eight-twelve inch fixed blades. Any of you guys with me on this?

I have been waiting for the Szabo and I had no idea about the Manix XL, so I can't wait to see that. I just looked up the G10 Espada XL. I can't believe it! A 7.5 inch folding blade! That may be a little much, but I admire Cold Steel's willingness to push the envelope. I am going to a local knife show this weekend, so I'll have to keep an eye out for it.R@y wrote:The upcoming Szabo folder should be big enough for many. It was at the Amsterdam Meet this year and its massive, check Wouters review.
Also the XL Manix is impressive, I've handled a proto but man, its heavy.
Another option could be the new & cheaper G10 Espada XXXXXL, (7 inch blade?)

I think at a point folders just become stupid. 6+ inches of blade?
What locations allow such a folder to be legally carried where a similar fixed-blade would be deemed unacceptable. Yes I guess you can fold it to be smaller for certain carry set-ups but then you run into a weaker initial design, weight, deployment speed, and more parts to rust/jam. Just to adhere to a decent standard the lock has to be quite robust because you are extending the lever that much further. The pivot should probably be reinforced along with the liners, etc.
I would put a Schempp Rock against any similar length folder on the market. Slashing, piercing, and carry weight. It's hard to beat (especially for like $110).

The point of my thread was not fixed blades vs. folders. I like fixed blades too, but I can't put a 6 inch fixed blade comfortably in my pocket. I also don't use my big blades to chop or pry, and they work great for my purposes, like slicing a large loaf of bread or large jersey tomato, which is not easy with a sub 4" blade.Blerv wrote:I think at a point folders just become stupid. 6+ inches of blade?

Do I want to see Spyderco go all Cold Steel like on us? No. Would I like to see one or two XL folding Spydercos that I can put to use in my garden, kitchen, camping, hiking, etc.? Absolutely!

No intent to be antagonistic or to thread-jack, just inserting a pragmatic opinion. The sake of comparison has to come up though because LARGE folders are hardly subtle to carry or legal for most municipalities. Same reason why people compare large fixed blade knives to small hatchets...they compete for the same job. In fact, in most situations you listed above a FB would be a fraction of the cost.Onionman wrote:The point of my thread was not fixed blades vs. folders. For me a Stretch or Manix works great for food prep in a pinch. Being legal, light, and comfortable are victories as well. Knives with 3" or less become difficult or messy unless your spreading crackers. Still, I'll personally take legal and messy.
Different strokes for different folks. For this particular "folk" large folders are generally pointless. That doesn't make other people's desire for them or use for them any less valid.
Now a Spyderco Tuff in 3V steel and a burly RIL lock? Unlike every other large folder on the market it has a purpose: Performance.
PS: Manix XL, Persian XL, Tuff, Szabo Folder and so-on. Spyderco is already working on it. :)
Darn... no mention of the Frontier, oh well... for the best... seeing as I want all the ones Sal listed, my wallet thanks spyderco for spacing out my must-haves a little bit :p .

Lovely! I hope that one of them is sort of "Traditionally" shaped...no negative blade angles or funky ergonomic handles, just a nice quality simple looking knife. Would love that!!sal wrote:While many prefer average size blades, we do recognize that there is a market for large folders and we've had many requests for same. We do have several in-the-works; a Szabo, Schempp Persian, Bison and one Peter calls "whatsitbig" for lack of a better name at this time. Blades in the 5" range.

I think you should keep the name; the Spyderco Whatsitbig. :psal wrote:While many prefer average size blades, we do recognize that there is a market for large folders and we've had many requests for same. Thanks for the info Sal, I guess that I need to start saving up. Large Persian and at least one whatsitbig sound very interesting for starters. I live on a farm, where you don't have to worry about legality issues and a larger folder would be nice, you know to give the Millie a break. I will probably pick up a Warrior sometime before winter, although I prefer the folders.sal wrote:While many prefer average size blades, we do recognize that there is a market for large folders and we've had many requests for same.
