I've used my T-Mag a couple of times when I noticed I had missed a spot...but not really interested in trying a full face shave. I'll leave that to my razor.

The reason I switched was because I had less razor burn with my Spyderco knives that I took time to sharpen well for the desired task. Both of my Shaving Spyderco's are 30 degrees at the edge. Taken from diamond rod all the way through to Ultra Fine, and then stropped twice. First on an old belt that has the back side treated with green rouge and then on a proper strop that was given to me as a gift from a specialty store. That puts a nice edge on them for face shaving in my experience.

By the way, my Native is a dedicated razor and does not see general duty, just incase anyone was wondering. On the other hand, when I am traveling abroad, the UK Pen Knife is the only knife I take along, so it does it all plus shaving duties.

Thank you everyone for participating in this poll and for offering your experiences. The poll will be active for 7 days from when I posted it.

You don't realize how lucky you are. My job won't allow me to grow a beard and I hate shaving every day because I have fast growing coarse facial hair. I got written up once for being out of compliance with the facial hair policy. No fun :( In so many words my boss said "would you rather have a job or a beard?" Wasn't a very tough decision :)

And nope, I don't shave with any of my Spydies.

I test my knives on my arms. I can't say that I've taken an knife edge to what I'd want to shave with. They're sharp, but I haven't polished any to a comfortable shaver.

Besides, I've got a whole collection of straight (or open) razors to choose from when I'm ready to shave. Here's some of them...

I go back and forth between a goatee and a full beard, haven't had my face bare since I got back from working with cadets in summer 02. After 7 years of short hair and being forced to be clean shaven (I let it grow all week and shaved just for cadets during high school), I said I was either letting my hair grow or going for a beard.

Shaved down in march last year, kept it trimmed and clean till early june, and started growing the beard again. Takes me about 6 weeks to grow a full beard nicely, start trimming at 8 weeks.

Funny thing is that now I'm going to let the hair grow long and shave off the beard this summer. Probably take it all off in a month and be clean shaven for the first time in **** near 7 years as soon as my hair is long enough to gel back without it standing on end. Just because people are used to seeing me with a buzzcut and a beard :p I haven't had a haircut in about 2 months.

I use my spydies to do touchups if I missed a spot, but generally I have a bald spot above my knees from testing and usually the back of my hands.

I shaved about three day's worth of facial hair with my Zdp-189 Lum -- it didn't work out badly at all. I've got coarse, quick growing, hair and have found factory edges on Spyderco knives adequate to light shaving duty; but, if I wanted to shave regularly with one of them I'd definitely get a knife re-ground and modified for that purpose. A Centofante re-ground to an extremely thin profile -- and a blunt tip -- could probably work well as a lockback straight-razor.

...a future project?

I am a fan of using the right tool for the right job. I use straight razors for shaving, and spydercos for cutting. Though if I mised a spot I would definitely have a go at it with my knife. Just make sure you stretch the skin well :P

I've been fooling around shaving with my knives off and on for the last year. After purchasing some Shapton GS and sharpening my ZDP189 Delica I found that it was alot more comfortable than my Mach 3. Besides I usually shave once every 2-4 weeks which gets a little hard to shave with a regular razor. Been considering buying a straight razor since even if it takes a little longer I don't shave often enough to really be a big deal.

As for appearances well I haven't had a real hair cut in over 5 years just some self performed trims with a :spyder: . So with hair down to my waist I guess shaving don't make that big of a difference. I atleast try to wear a nice shirt and some good jeans to work, :D so I look semi professional.

I've used knives from my Endura 3 to my Manix to various Krein regrinds to shave my face cleanly. A Spyderco UF finish works well, but a .05 micron finish gives an extremely comfortable shave.

This thread is making me want to sharpen up my Byrd Meadowlark Rescue PE and give it a go. I think the PE rescue blade would make a great razor.

+1 :D
I've tried face shaving with my best Spydies and regreted the experience. Rough and nicked up is no way to go through a day or two. Razor blades are specificly made for shaving. My bestest Spydie can be stupidly sharp but is *NOT* designed to shave my face.

The unfortunate fact that I have to take a blood thinner every day does not make the experience plesent. As a matter of fact, the Coumadin makes the risk unacceptibe.

If I ever get a serious Wharnie I will try again.

BTW, surface cuts are not a big risk with Coumadin. Direct pressure, a tournecet or 911 will handle surface cuts. I got a big wake-up when my doctor explained blunt truma, a car wreck, bumping my head, falling down, ect were his and my worst worry.

I will always cherish the look on his face when we first discussed my hobby out the hospital. He is a a white guy but he blanched even whiter at the spinning snapping moves. I scared my docter *******less. Life is good...
Not really all that slick ;)
