Hi Mr. Walsh,
Welcome to the Spyderco forum.
Thanx for the kind words about our company and I'm sorry for your disappointment in the Lum design.
The Lum Chinese folder is part of our "Ethnic" series. We try to take an "ethnic" design from a part of the world where the design has evolved to a particular shape or pattern.
Then we try to create a modern folder that captures the basic shape and "spririt" of the design, but with modern materials and locks. These designs were generally created by very gifted craftsmen/designers that were also custom makers.
We've done quite a few over the years: The "Shabaria" folder design (Jordan Valley), by Eduard Bradichansky, Bob Lum designed a "Tanto" folder (Japan) and the Chinese folder (China) for us. Both Eduard and Bob have passed on. Even our "Kerambit" would have to be considered an "ethnic" design despite its recent promotion as tactical.
For the past few years, Ed Schempp has been designing our "Ethnic" series designs. These include the: "Persian" folder in 2 sizes, (Persia [Iran]), "Barong", "Khukuri" (Philipines).
Ed is also working with us on a few other "Ethnic" designs as well as more modern designs.
Some of these designs take years to actually produce. They require studying the history as well as the creation of the folding version.
As mentioned, we do have both larger and smaller "Chinese" folder designs that Bob made for us before he left. These are being considered for the future.
I would suggest that the ethnic series designs were not created with the thought that they would be a modern tactical folders.
They are more in the line of a time machine that permits we modern knife aficianados an opportunity to experience "how that design philosophy might perform in a folder made with modern hi-tech materials".

Thanks for all of the feedback on my thread. Yes I should have done my HOMEWORK and checked the stats of this knife. I have used Spydercos in the Field for a number of years. I know what works and what does not work. No more collector models for me.
Keep the collector models coming for me!
I have enough tactical MT's BM's & Spydercos to last 100 lifetimes.
Now its fun collecting different designs.
I am 100% certain a larger but still thin "Chinese" Lum folder would be a big hit.
Also agree with the non "coated" scales comment.
Too many other great options out there.
Just my 2......
Thanks again Sal, am very much enjoying the ride......... :D

Now I have to kick myself in the butt for not buying a SE Lum when I had the chance
I really like the design
