Welcome aboard, Spank. It is great to have you. I would personally purchase a Endura/Delica and a trainer and get some basic empty hand and knife training. If budget is no problem, that is the best way to invest your unlimited resources. Then when you have an overall understanding of sd and knives, you can begin to appreciate the different offerings that Spyderco has.

Enjoy yourself here and another welcome aboard to you! :D

***Note you can appreciate the knives now, but you will be able to find one that best fits your personal criteria for an sd blade. Hope I did not confuse you. Enjoy! God Bless.

Just thought I'd give an update. I decided up the Military with the plain edge and carbon fiber handle. I spent alot of time researching websites just trying to find a trustworthy website. I managed to get it for just under $200 USD

UPS just now dropped it off at the house. Needless to say, it feels AMAZING.

Now I just need to spend a little time with it, getting used to it.

Thanks :)

Great choice Spank. I am assuming you got the S90V steel version? The Military is one heckuva all-around knife that can perform many duties admirably and with the slim profile and lightweight carbon fiber handles, they really disappear in one's pocket or waistband.

Enjoy your new partner and use it in good health!

Try getting a Endura Trainer. It's similar in size to the Military and it allows you to work the knife a little harder for MBC practice. It's very enlightening, it was to me. You'd be surprised by the amount of impact you feel when making a 'dynamic cut' or blocking on a target.

I'm not a fan of the Military for SD, the linerlock is too exposed and poses a risk of accidentally unlocking in a hasty and sloppy grip, which will happen in stressfull situations.

+ 1 on getting the trainer. Training to access and open a folder under stress is mandatory if you are going to carry a folder for SD. In addition, Filipino Martial Arts or some other knife combatives should be studied.

As for problems with the Military liner lock disengaging under hard martial use, I have not had that happen to any of my Militaries, and I do some pretty significant martial drills. Wouter, I think that you may find that this is going to be "hand" or "person" specific. For example, I have used H&K firearms for years and have also used Glocks. I have found that, due to the way I grip a handgun and the particular size and shape of my hands, the Glock 22 is not a very good fit for me (unless I change the way I grip a handgun, the top of my thumb has a tendency to nudge the slide release during firing and sometimes locks the slide back), and that the little ambidextrous magazine release on the full size H&K USP .45 ACP has a tendency to trap parts of my skin when doing speed reloads (giving me a nasty blood blister or two). This does not happen with other Glock models (like the .45 ACP Glock 21 I often carry) or other Heckler & Koch handguns. I have had similar issues with some knives. I would suggest that the OP do a few drills with his Military, though, to see if he falls into the "liner lock may disengage" category when using the knife in a martial manner.

I believe, with the exception of a 1.5 inch blade limit for automatic knives, there does not appear to be a blade length limit. Certain types of knives (the typical "dirk" and "dagger" provisions) are banned:

From the Massachusetts Criminal Code

"Chapter 269: Section 10. Carrying dangerous weapons; possession of machine gun or sawed-off shotguns; possession of large capacity weapon or large capacity feeding device; punishment

Section 10. (a) Whoever, except as provided or exempted by statute, knowingly has in his possession; or knowingly has under his control in a vehicle; a firearm, loaded or unloaded, as defined in section one hundred and twenty-one of chapter one hundred and forty without either:

...

(b) Whoever, except as provided by law, carries on his person, or carries on his person or under his control in a vehicle, any stiletto, dagger or a device or case which enables a knife with a locking blade to be drawn at a locked position, any ballistic knife, or any knife with a detachable blade capable of being propelled by any mechanism, dirk knife, any knife having a double-edged blade, or a switch knife, or any knife having an automatic spring release device by which the blade is released from the handle, having a blade of over one and one-half inches, or a slung shot, blowgun, blackjack, metallic knuckles or knuckles of any substance which could be put to the same use with the same or similar effect as metallic knuckles, nunchaku, zoobow, also known as klackers or kung fu sticks, or any similar weapon consisting of two sticks of wood, plastic or metal connected at one end by a length of rope, chain, wire or leather, a shuriken or any similar pointed starlike object intended to injure a person when thrown, or any armband, made with leather which has metallic spikes, points or studs or any similar device made from any other substance or a cestus or similar material weighted with metal or other substance and worn on the hand, or a manrikigusari or similar length of chain having weighted ends; or whoever, when arrested upon a warrant for an alleged crime, or when arrested while committing a breach or disturbance of the public peace, is armed with or has on his person, or has on his person or under his control in a vehicle, a billy or other dangerous weapon other than those herein mentioned and those mentioned in paragraph (a), shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than two and one-half years nor more than five years in the state prison, or for not less than six months nor more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction, except that, if the court finds that the defendant has not been previously convicted of a felony, he may be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction."

The "a device or case which enables a knife with a locking blade to be drawn at a locked position" looks ominous, as it could be interpreted to ban waved knives, though I doubt that was the actual intention of the law.
