I got my hands on one last week (1-12) directly from the hands of Jurphaas on the First Dutch Knife Exhibition. Great event BTW. Thanks Jurphaas for letting me have one of the two you had in your possession.

I currently have a G-10 Cara Cara, and a SS PE Crossbill.

Planning to get a 2 G-10 Crossbills (one in PE, one in SE), a G-10 Flight, and maybe a SS Flight.

The SS Crossbill surprised me as it was my first SS knife, and I found it to be pretty smooth after a bit of wearing in.

I was wondering if there are any normal :spyder: 's in the shape of the Flight blade pattern because i really like it.

I have a G-10 Robin. I think it was a very good deal for the money. I am happy with it but it came to me VERY dirty, I cleaned it out myself, and now it works fine. :)

First off, Welcome to the Forum!
I have not seen any Spyderco knives quite like the Flight. The closest would probably be the out of production Blackhawk or Renegade. The G-10 Flight is by far my favorite Byrd so far.

sharkattack wrote:My main concern would possibly be disappointment with edge retention of the blade. But like you say, for $30 it's not a lot to gamble on.

If this is your main concern then stop worrying because the edge retention of the byrd steel IMHO exceeds PE H-1, and AUS-8 .... ;)

I agree with Brian, the edge retention of the Byrd blade steel is superior to the AUS6-8 and 440A-B you get in comparably priced knives. Before buying better knives( :spyder: ) I had a Gerber with some 440 Variant, it didn't stay as sharp, for as long as my Robin.

Could be. That's one that I always forget, maybe because I've never seen one in real life. I tend to blow right by the SS handled models anyway. Too many years of working in extreme temperatures to care much for metal handles.

I keep a Raven in my tool box 'just in case'. It's sturdy enough to handle all kinds of tasks, yet inexpensive enough to not worry about it too much, and to keep my EDC knife in better condition. A great cost / benefit purchase.

I just got a Byrd Cara Cara w/ G10 handles, and it has officially goten me in to the Spyderco obsession. I was looking for a "cheap" gift knife - said "ahhh, let me see that cheap spyderco" and as soon I touched it said "WOW!! I'll take TWO!" I figured that if the budget Spydie line was that nice, their high end stuff must be great! I picked up a USA Native right after that - and I think I'm a bigger fan of the Byrd between the two (fit and finish wise - obviously they are very different knives). I have an Endura Wave on the way and look forward to comparing the blades between it and the Cara Cara. I also wanted to see what the USA G10 models are like and have a Manix in the mail as well.

I'm totally blown away by the amount of knife you get for the money w/ the Byrd line. My Cara Cara seems like a very solid knife - and one that would fit in well with the $80-100 knife market. The fact that it can be had for around $25 is obscene - almost seems unfair to the other mainstream makers who do their best to sell "garbage" knives for the same price!

I have a feeling I'll be getting several more Byrds, and a pile of Spydies in the near future. My wife is going to kill me...

Just for the record, Dan, that was one of Brian's archive shots. He probably has twice as many now. :p
