Good point. Although I have yet to purchase a neck knife, I will say that ANYTHING around my neck (usually an ID card or a key) is on a breakaway style cord or lanyard. I use the ski lanyards available from REI. They use a little piece of tubing to connect the ends of the cord behind the neck. That way, if you get hung up on an object, you lose the identification around your neck, instead of losing your life. Seems like a reasonable tradeoff.selektah wrote:Those of you who wear neck knives, do you keep them on a chain or cord which will break away - for quick access or if someone tries to strangle you with it? .

I've usually got a spydie on my neck... have rigs for the millie, ss 'fly, bone kiwi and spur. All of them simply have 550 on em. I used to wear my 'fly on ball chain, got tired of having it open up and having my knife floating around in my shirt (tucked in tshirt).
I have em hanging so the pivot is right at the bottom of my sternum (may as well make use of the natural indent), knife doesn't flop around unless I'm jogging. Just grab both sides of the 550 at my collar and pull up to access.
Even when I'm naked I have a knife on me.

Deacon, I just noticed how good you are looking in recent pictures. Good work! Joe

From mid april to late september here in maryland, the creeks are ripe for wading and catching crayfish. But, I lost a delica 1 about 4 years ago in the hip - deep mud doing this, so I had a neck sheath made up for my endura 3. I figure that if the mud is high enough for me to lose this knife, I probably wont care much at that point :D

The Scorpion was the M.O.D. that I carried under my SWAT armor. I still have it and like it. The SPOT is another favorite.whitefeather wrote:For those that like the "wicked mean and nasty look" check out the M.O.D. Scorpion  Sorry no pics

This may be blasphemy on this forum, but my favorite neck knife is the BM 160 TK-1. I have one with the black, partially serrated blade.
It is very lightweight and very ergonomic. The polymer coating on the handle avoids the cold feel of bare steel that most skeletonized knives have and gives it a wonderful grip. I love this knife for the river.
Many custom neck knives are simply paired down versions of larger knives. This knife is built to be a fully functional small knife, kind of like the SPOT and Swick. These two are definitely in the same class as the BM, but I just like the BM's handle, blade shape, handle material, and sheath better - not to mention the very comfortable break-away lanyard(s) that come with the knife.

I love neck knives. I'll wear them out in public on the outside of my shirt if it's a place I'm familiar with, but may tuck it inside if I think it's prudent to prevent folks from being uneasy or overly curious. I especially like them in the summer for when you may be wearing lightweight shorts or swimtrunks and can't, or don't want to, carry a folder in them.
Here's a pic of my current rotation, to which I will soon be adding the Begg Tree Frog that folks have mentioned previously in the thread.

Top to bottom: Shane Sibert Flash, Tanya Begg Thumb Shovel of Doom, Tom Mayo (don't think this model has a name), RKK/Jim Burke Syphon, Michael Burch Platypus proto, Benchmade 210, Todd Begg Meso

It does. It is a Buck Kaala, designed by Tom Mayo. S30V blade, too, in case you didn't know that either. Anyway, he lives here in Hawaii, I know him. I've owned one of his knives before, they are very nice, then the TSA stole it from my luggage. Oh happy day.....jujigatame wrote:Tom Mayo (don't think this model has a name),

I know the Buck/Mayo collab is called the Kaala, but mine is a custom Mayo in 154V steel. Anyplace I've seen them for sale they haven't had a name, just called "Tom Mayo Necker" or something like that. I think the only Buck/Mayo collab to share the same model name between custom and production is the TNT.
Nice that you live near/know Tom. I'd imagine that could be simultaneously exciting and financially perilous for any knife lover.
