While I'm not enough of a fan of the Manix to really care one way or the other, I took that statement as Sal's "dark side" in action.Bolstermanic wrote:Yeah, me too, on both counts.

For me the Manix is just too big anyway. :) I prefer something lighter and thinner .........or a fixed blade.
At least with Spyderco it's always interesting to see what the discontinued items are replaced with. With Spyderco most times they are replaced with better knives (IMHO).

Not bad news, Really
Do I see the continuation of a trend developing here? It seems like every one of Eric Glesser's designs tend to run a course of 2 to 3 years then just out of the blue they tend to get axed. It does seem like his designs are never meant to be long term flagship models.
I thought it was strange when the Dodo got chopped from the line up when it did. However this might be a good omen too. Because as much of a superb blade as the MANIX is/was they must really have something sterling coming down the pipeline to take it's place or fill the void.
So if there is something else over the horizon that will replace the MANIX it must be a gem. Either way we're going to win.

Flagship or not, or the intent behind it is unknown to me. What I do know is that the manix is one of the most well respected, most bragged about and most reccomended of all the current spydercos. How that translates into sales I don't know but from the talk on blade forums and places like that it should be a decent seller. If they truly have a better replacement then it must be a really awsome knife.
If I had to guess I'd think they are only going to get rid of one of the manixs', not both. Between them it's a difficult decision. Joe

The Scorpius, which IIRC was one of the first of Eric's designs to be released, is still in the catalog.JD Spydo wrote:Do I see the continuation of a trend developing here? Ask yourself how many Spyderco models, regardless of designer, that were introduced for the first time in 2000 are still in the catalog? 2001? 2002? 2003? Think what you're observing is more of a general pattern with Spyderco models rather than something confined to Eric's designs. "Survivors", like the Military, are the exceptions, not the rule.

If you also look around, 2-3 seems to be the lifespan of many knives from many other manufactures also. The Deacon wrote:The Scorpius, which IIRC was one of the first of Eric's designs to be released, is still in the catalog.

If you could replace a slow moving, or even a steady moving product with a newer hotter, higher selling model... Would you not do it too?
I thought the Manix was a hot seller. I could be wrong. Anyway, I gave up on them because every one I owned (4-5 of them) had vertical blade play. They are also heavier than they really need to be. Very ergonomic and great blade design, I just didn't like the fact that the blade was not tight when locked.
I know I am not the only one that has had a Manix with blade play so I think that may have something to do with it going away. I have sold all my Manix knives and replaced them with Militarys. There is nothing the Manix can do that the Military can't so why not carry the lighter knife?
As for the Dodo, that is one that I agree with. What was the point of that thing anyway? I had one and hated so I got rid of it. Later I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I gave it another chance and really tried to like it. I just don't get this knife. It must be how I use knives compared to people that like the Dodo that makes me not like it. I just didn't see anything about the Dodo that I liked.

How many models of anything last more than a few years? How many times have you bought a perfect pair of shoes to only learn after they are worn out that the model was discontinued last year?
Like Deacon said, survivor designs are the exception no Anti-Eric design conspiracy.

Thinking out loud
I sadly have to agree with Zen , just time maybe to make room for new designs if this is a reality . One thing to bear in mind alot of knives over the years have come back to life in a different variation such as handle materials or steel , so there could be another run someday . Just a thought , regards MG2
