Aloha Allen,
Easy one: Bass guitar would be our very own Hannibal Lecter.
Six string would be our very own Dialex.
Period.
God bless :)

Strange that no one mentioned John Lee Hooker, Gary Moore, Popa Chubby and especially Brian May from Queen, whom I like a lot.
Add those to the list. :)

These dudes rock harder with acoustic guitars than most other bands. :Ddedguy wrote:speaking of acoustic, despite being in a "joke" band Kyle Gas of Tenacious D is a pretty **** good musician.

My favorite guitar players(not in order of preference):
1.Jeff Beck-Absolutely amazing! Even more so considering that he hasn't used a guitar pick in years, totally reinvented his style.
2.Buckethead- So **** weird, how could you not like him?
3.Jimi Hendrix- Always sounds fresh to me, although I've been enjoying his short career for years
4.Jaco Pastorius(one of the best bass guitar player/Jazz composers to ever live)- putting Victor Wooten and other modern wonder players aside, you can't beat Jaco's taste and sense of phrasing. A real musical genius.
5.Derek Trucks- My favorite slide player. He is so young, but plays very maturely. Also a fingerstyle player.
6.Zack Wylde- He's a shred master, AND he puts feel into it. Sadly, you don't find that very often.

TOO many greats to choose just ONE!!!
the Greats who left us Far TOO early:
1) JIMI HENDRIX
2) STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
3) DUANE ALLMAN
Current Greats
1)ERIC CLAPTON (the benchmark that all guitarist's are judged by..MHO)
2)Carlos Santana ( I can pick his "style" of playing from any others
Within a few chords)
3)Dickey Betts (Allman Bros Band)
4) bonnie Raitt (Very underestimated..plays a MEAN slide!!)
Two that have not been mentioned yet..
1)Jeff Healy (Blind guitarist from the "Roadhouse" movie w/Patrick Swayze
has a very Unique playing style with the guitar laying flat on
his lap)
2)Robert Cray (outstanding "touch" guitarist who has some really great
blues tunes)

:spyder: Hands down my favorite guitarist is John Mooney. The guy actually aprenticed under Son House himself. It just doesn't get any bluesier than that! :spyder:
More of what does not work will not work. Robin Cooper, Rokudan; Aikikai.
There is great power in the profound observation of the obvious. John Stone, Rokudan; Aikikai

Lotsa of folks have already mentioned the greats. So I'll try and not repeat what others have already posted......with the exception of Stevie Ray!
When I think of great guitarists I think of people who changed what was going on at the time, people who have taken what others have done before them and made it their own. Allot of the people previously mentioned have certainly done that, allot of them have been the ones who have done the influencing. I'll try and list a couple more.
1) Johnny Ramone- Three cords, ultra loud, ultra fast......there would be no Punk Rock without Johnny.
2) The Edge- I'm not a huge U2 fan by any means, but his initial lack of skills turned into that borderline obsessive, melodic strumming, that has influenced countless other bands on both side of the pond. When you hear it, you know it's U2, when you hear others doing it you think....."is that a new U2 song"
3) Mick Jones (The Clash)- What can I say, Mick took the influence of Johnny Ramone, and many others and proved that a Punk guitarists could actually play there instruments....from three basic power cords to that rock/reggae sound The Clash became known for, Mick could without a doubt play his instrument.
All just my humble opinion of course.

I would add Jack White if the White Stripes.
A band with only a girl at the drum and him on guitar and piano playing as loud as the Ramones...... and as succesfull around the planet...
They are so melodious.
Please listen to Hello Operator on their 2nd album The Stilj......
Amazing....
