The best flatground folder from the spyder factory would be IMO the manix or mini manix. The manix takes the flatgrounded blade symmetry all the way up to the spine so that leaves you up with a blade that has a bigger width in general but will compromize this with amazing cutting abilities. The angle of the grind is less obtuse than on the military so cutting perfomance will be better. But the mili offcourse packs a lot of cutting power in a slimmer package. In the end it is just what you prefer.

Cheers

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Caly Jr/UKPK for lighter work.
Para for a little more robust work.
I like all of the above very much.

C-54>> Ignored, but not here

Post by JD Spydo »

I am finding this most unusual that there is no one else who likes the C-54 big Calypso other than myself. It is the epitome of flat grinds  . It truly gave birth to the highly celebrated Calypso Jr which I carry daily> ZDP-189 no less

I guess I need to take into account that we do have a lot of new members here. A lot of members who do not remember knives from the 1998-2000 era which produced some hall of fame classics and the time that the Lil T among a few others emerged as well.

No flat grind has the character that the C-54 has either. C-54 what a colossal comeback candidate

Big Calypso/SE, a beautiful knife.

Had one once but it looked to nice to use for me with the sleek Micarta handle so the knife moved to Hawaï.

I would very much like to have a Big Calypso with black G10 handles ;)

BlackNinja beat me to it. I'm torn between the Calypso Jr. and the Chinese folder. I'm sure I'd vote for the Lil' Temp if I owned one! :D

I just got my R2 today, and I have to agree. Very acute grind and edge, great cutter, and the sharpest knife I have ever got from the factory. It push cuts newsprint over 3" from where you hold it with your fingers, and hairs just jump off your arm when you shave with it.

Glad you're lovin' the R2 GunMike1.....even the "high saber flat ground" Navigator2 and Volpe separate matter like no one else's business...these two also deserve an "honorable mention"!

The Stretch is a great flat ground knife

It does not matter which hand holds the knife, it only matters that there is a knife

Wow, that's kind of what I was expecting. This thread just lists a whole bunch of spydies that are on my list to get.

I was kinda of suprised, I didn't know that the stretch was flat ground. I might hafta start watching for one of these closer.

The R is annother fine FG spydie. What was it based on anything like the upcoming S is?

Hi Joe. You'll be surprised, but I do love the Salsa myself. But since we are talking about the very favorite, mine is (by far) the Military, closely followed by the Lil'T.
I think the hollow grind is popular because it is indeed easy to sharpen, easier to manufacture and you can make all sort of things with the grind lines (read "add to the cool factor") ;)

BIG Caly
Mini Manix 83
