i fixed the lock on my cricket the other night. you wont belive what caused it to get wedged open and all that lock failure. Pocket lint... wedged up inside the pivot area where i couldnt really get a look at it, and didnt notice it. i loosened the pivot up to see what was wrong and to see if i needed to send it out, and saw lint. after it was removed, i oiled my lil' friend up and good as new. just goes to prove im not so smart after all.

One area of weakness used to be that clip screws used to be set directly into the material that made up the handle slab. I got my clip stock on a seat belt and quite easily pulled out the clip on a Sea 40 jot. I didn't even realize what happened until I found the knife in the bottom of my pocket. I had a similar problem with a Tim Wagner where the clip screw stripped out to the fact it was just set in the g-10. Warranty and repair took care of those problems which is a big part of the reason I've stuck with spyderco. I feel bad thinking about these incidents that neither of them were really the result of misuse. And spyderco possibly partially due to customers like me sets their clip screws firmly in a steel setting nowadays. :o

Broken Spydies

Post by cyberhawk »

Greetings Spydy People,
Although I've never broken a Spydy, I found these at the factory sale last week for $5 each. Now they are both slightly reprofiled and carried without fear. Hawk

Haven't broken a blade, but I did muck up the tip of a police model about 13 years ago. I was shooting a pistol and the handle became loose. For some reason that escapes my wizened noggin, I just had to tighten it up right then and there even though I lacked the proper screwdriver. I tightened the screw but ruined the tip...each tool has it own use and misuse. :(
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

I've broken the tip off on 2 Delica's. Last time my heart hurt so bad, i've changed EDC to a Pro- grip. Now, if i ever break THAT tip off, i shall stop carrying knives all along :D

Just an update... it's been extremely busy here... we didn't get to get any pics of breaking knives, but we haven't forgotten. Hopefully, we'll be able to put some up next week.

Take care!

Kristi

LOL Just cruise E-bay any given week, you'll see all kinds of abused and damaged Spydercos for sale. And people still buy them. Never see that with any other manufacturers. There's a message there!

I bought a $1.00 knife at Walmart just to see how it would break. It was similar to a Spyderco Delica in appearance, but cheaper. I put the blade in a vice and pushed on it until it broke. It broke at the pivot hole and interestingly the blade broke before the plastic handle did. I believe a Spyderco would have done much better but it is likely to break in the same way or at the thumb hole. The blade for a decent knife is a lot like glass and shatters rather than bends. I believe the Spyderco FRN handle is very strong and will outlast the blade. No knife makes a good prybar. And an expensive one really does not make a good prybar.

Nope, never. In my experience Spyderco knives are nigh on indestructible.

FYI, I think this is the oldest zombie thread I have seen resurrected! Seven and a half years....

To contribute to the thread, I have never broken a Spydie. They are excellent instruments for slicing not blunt objects for destruction.

I broke an Endura 4 saber ground model. The part on the lock bar that slips into the slot on the blade when the knife is open sheared right off. I bought it to be a beater knife. I was playing a game of Stab Log.
You know, its when you have a log on the ground and you hold the knife about chest level and then drop it and hope it sticks into the log. :D

That doesn't sound broken it just sounds like you modded it to be a slip joint :P

I broke the tip off a Manix2 while stabbing a couple guys in an alley... or I dropped it on the tile in my bathroom, I can't remember which...

Either way Spyderco manage to work magic on it, as it saw magically transformed into a knife with a great tip again.

Best (or worst) I have done is snagged my Endura's clip on the lawnmower getting off one day. It sprung the (hourglass) clip, and cracked it at the lanyard hole. W&R had me a new clip in 3 days or so. I have sprung this one a few times with no problems rebending it.
