I went fishing in some local rivers and estuaries yesterday - Found this Common Snapping Turtle far enough down the river that it was nearly in saltwater.



I used to always think they lived strictly in freshwater but this is now the second time I’ve found a Common Snapping Turtle in a brackish environment. I now believe they can not only tolerate brackish water but also thrive in it.

And I got skunked while fishing but a Horseshoe Crab did play a quick prank on me at one point and snagged himself on my lure to get my hopes up…

I used to always think they lived strictly in freshwater but this is now the second time I’ve found a Common Snapping Turtle in a brackish environment. I now believe they can not only tolerate brackish water but also thrive in it.

Crabs can be tricky ! Nice shot of the Snapper , in Illinois Snappers in some areas are a delicacy. Growing up my grandfather was an avid fisherman he had a circular little picket fence in side of yard for Snapper deliveries by night fishing friends . A blacksmith made him tools to hook the mouth and pin the neck for cleaning . There are a few places where I live that are supplied with Snapper meat by commercial fishermen . Dan

Smart man your Grandfather was Dan, I have a friend in Houma, Louisiana that sometimes sends me crawfish and one time he added some gator and snapping turtle meat to the package and it’s really tasty

So this doe found a gap in the high fence I installed for a customer and as I was repairing it she showed up for her morning hosta meal with a look of concern…she’s devoured approximately $500 worth of plants in a week so I had to repair it…she’s standing in a patch of huckleberries so she’s got plenty to eat plus she has a pass this fall
