Very nice!

What’s the one on the left? Thanks.
JD Smith, no?
Yes, it’s the 2009 foliage green JD Smith sprint. I really like the autumn-themed colors of that trio. :)

Some people have dreams about needing to use a gun and it won’t ever fire or the trigger is so heavy they can’t pull it back.

I dreamt that I was at SFO and every Rex45 native chief in the store I held had a slipping lock.

I already have the story of searching for the Rex 45 Native Chief for over a year but I would still Love to know what caused the lengthy delay. I know covid played its part but there has to be something more specific. Inquiring minds would like to know. For personal reference. :) :spyder:
I broke mine down yesterday and the code near the pivot was “4-20 B”. My assumption is the blade was produced in April of last year. Might be wrong there, but I imagine there’s some backstory with the delay.

Mine (REX 45) came in, but i got the Phoenix in the same shipment and that of course stole the show. I will enjoy both in the long haul though.

Maybe the scale color was off?.. Maybe somebody broke in and stole the lockbars?... Maybe the backspacers were machined wrong?.. Maybe a Chief named Rex sued for defamation?... We now get to live our life with this mystery lingering in the back of our minds.

I’m going to go with “global pandemic” as a sufficient answer for the delay. I’m guessing they run models in batches in Golden, they tweak the lines for running sets of some PM2 variants (maybe an exclusive or 2 plus a sprint), then some Para 3s, some Native 5s, etc. Seems like the Rex45 Chief slipped out of the queue that probably included the first G10 S30V model, and didn’t get attended to again until they were ready to run another set of Chiefs (the CF S90V one and I’m guessing 2 more exclusives I’ve heard strong rumors of). They had run the blades with all the other Rex45 sprints that did manage to get completed, go through QC, and be boxed up and released before and during the pandemic. There were probably trays of Rex45 Chief parts raring to go just lacking the scales that still hadn’t been made (until this second run has fired up).

The CF S90v sat in the queue for quite some time as well. I think Golden is just trying to get to the “new” normal for production. I’m glad we all got a chance to get our hands on these sprint runs.

Other, more knowledgeable members might know if it is true, that Spyderco will always/traditionally relese a carbon fiber with S90V steel sprint run first and the others will follow after.
If that is true, than I can speculate, that even though they had the Rex45 ready they were holding it until the S90V was ready too.

My CPM REX 45 desires are met, at least for now. :p It's been a long wait since the announcement of the REX Chief and i am glad it is here.

This is the first sprint that i've bought two examples of-- the second one is in the mail to OZ. Glad to help a brother out. :spyder:

Edit:

I will add, for the sake of discussion, that my REX Chief has the tiniest bit of "lock rock" or vertical blade play when locked. It is so little that i didn't notice it on initial inspection-- only on the follow-up. I suspect it is well within warranty tolerances and is just as safe as my 7 other Golden mid back locks.

My CF s90v Chief arrived today. I’m delighted.

Wow. How I feel about this knife is how I expected to feel about the Shaman. Funny how two very similar designs feel so different in my hands.

Mine just arrived the other day. I can say i'm very pleased with the fit and finish and the blade is razor sharp out of the box. I've been away for a long time, ever since i moved in UK, and we all know the knife laws around here. Not to mention that to live in UK and buy and use american made knives is quite expensive hobby. Especially after the brexit. Not to complain but we basically pay full MSRP price - 20% vat + 8% import tax on top of that. Crazy times we live in. And yes, the blade is slightly off centered but i couldn't care any less. :D Life's too short to worry about off centered blades. And on the pics against my old warrior/beater the manix 2 xl and my baby Wasp. Sorry for the bad pics - it's late evening and i had very busy day.

I was carrying my Rex 45 Military and a Native 5 in anticipation of the Chief’s arrival today.

It was very strange that the Chief was grossly off-center. After opening and closing, the centering was good, and then, mysteriously, it was nearly rubbing a scale.

It turns out that the pivot screws were inadequately tightened! I likely got over a half a turn on them, eliminating the gross side-to-side play and centering the blade nicely.

The trio is complete, but hoping to become a quartet if rumors of a 4V cousin turn out to be accurate.

Order a backup rex, splurge for CF, or cross my fingers for a 4V drop.

Decisions decisions :D

Slapped a black clip on my rex:

Can't get over how good this design is. I have no idea how I managed to handle one at New Graham a few years ago and not immediately purchase one.

If you really like the Native Chief, grab the CF S90v sprint. My example was superb.
