To Honor?
Re: To Honor?
I'd be interested to know if any progress has been made on "The Deacon"?

The Kopa idea was shot down by the maker. I'm working on a Stretch 2.

Re: To Honor?
When I first got my hands on my Super Blue Stretch, the first thought I had was that this knife would be neat with a straight spine. So it was to my delight to hear Paul suggest something like that and I'm delighted again to hear you might be working on something like that. Thank you.sal wrote:The Kopa idea was shot down by the maker. I'm working on a Stretch 2.

Re: To Honor?
Well, not that anyone would be lining up to purchase this knife, but if I got to make the Vivi, this is what it'd be
- Start with a Szabo folder
- Swap the S30V for H1 for extra toughness and corrosion resistance
- Redesign the blade so it has a straight spine, straight wharncliffe cutting edge, and acute Yojimbo style tip with NO rounding like the Salts.
- Make the blade .5 to 1mm thinner for superior cutting ability.
- Make the cutting edge go further back, closer to the handle. Less "wasted space"
- Keep the negative blade angle of the original blade shape
- Enlarge the opening hole a bit, and sand down the point on the handle blocking access to it on the presentation side.
- Remove the option for tip down carry so the pivot is easier to keep clean
- Add a cobra hood because it makes the thumb ramp more comfortable during hard use
- Use the CF/G10 scales used in black bladed Szabo
- Use Ti for the liners or skeletonize them further or both, to keep the weight down
- All black hardware, black clip, TiNi coated blade
It'd probably cost about 400-450$ and I'd be the only one to buy them, but a man can dream
Or for something simpler, a Golden, CO made Cara Cara 2 with a round opening hole, TiNi coated S30V blade, blacked out clip and hardware, G10 with Ti liners. It was the first Spyderco design I liked, and I think its the best design in the Endura / Police family. Has the best ergonomics out of the Endura 3 / Endura 4 / Police / Police 3 style handle designs.

Re: To Honor?
Excellent idea and I for one can not think of a more worthy candidate for that honor. The Deacon is a font of information about Spydercos and very willing to pass it on to fellow forum members. He is valued not only for his knowledge of Spydercos but other topics as well.

Re: To Honor?
A Deaconized Stretch2 would be a fine knife indeed. :)

Upsetting, but not really surprise. Deacon style Stretch 2 can be interesting.sal wrote:The Kopa idea was shot down by the maker. I'm working on a Stretch 2.

Re: To Honor?
Great idea. Cannot wait to see what is thought up. My personal opinion is something with a Scandi grind, about. 3.5 inch blade. Micarta handle. Love this idea for a member to come up with the idea. Would like to see more members have this opportunity. Keep up the great work at spyderco sal!!!!
Re: To Honor?
If this turns out to be a straight spined Stretch 2, I think it'll ultimately be a classic, since there don't seem to be many medium length choiled lockback straight-spined spydies available now, and it would fill this "much needed gap" (we really don't need the gap -- we need it filled
). Correct me if I'm missing something.
Paul humbly suggested that it just be an inexpensive lightweight FRN model, but I think it would be nice for this first model to be fully lined so it could be dressed up with Nishijin, micarta, wood, etc. I think a plain VG-10 blade would be fine but would really like black Nishijin scales, but this is about Paul's likes, not mine

K-390 on hand: Mule Team 17, Police 4 G-10, Endela (burlap micarta), Endela backup, Endura (canvas micarta), Straight Stretch (now blade-swapped with G-10 Stretch), Delica Wharncliffe, Dragonfly Wharncliffe, & Dragonfly Wharncliffe shorty mod
