Really do wish Sal would chime in on that.

If the pins contact the liners when the blade is fully open, they MAY serve as stops to prevent the type of slight vertical play that occurs with many midlocks when you apply cutting pressure. At the other end, they may augment or replace the kick as a positive blade stop. Those are just guesses, but would be positive benefits. OTOH, since they are open to the interior of the knife, they do create a potential "crap trap".

If you look at the exposed picture when the knife is open, it doesn't look like the pin is contacting the liner. If you look at the shape of the lock bar, it looks like what you're saying might be right.

I am limited with my imagination and picturing this one in my head just isn't coming up with anything.

The "crap trap" seems like the biggest negative about this knife. Because it is so small closed, you'd want to put it in a lot of places with crap that could get trapped in there. If you look at the lock cutout when the blade is closed, that's right where I wouldn't want stuff to get trapped. Even though it's a negative, a little compressed air is probably a simple solution to that problem.

I'm almost positive that the pin is a simple close-stop, that's all. There is no other place on the tang or front choil tip that makes contact with the back plates upon closing as you see in most other lock backs.

Hi All and Particularly Sal,
I ordered this knife, and was in Love @ first sight. I handled it, and was even more in Love, so much so, that I couldn't help Myself, and immediately pressed into service as My favorite EDC.
It is perfect in that roll, and the Carbon Fiber is an excellent scale choice, Love this CF the best, it's the texture. Love the thinner blade, this thing is a razor! Love the weight, I carry it, and forget I have it until I need a blade! Well, I play with it alot too, Can't leave it alone, so mostly it is in My hand.
I ordered another, so I have a back-up in case something happens to it, I'd be lost without it. Sal, You have outdone Yourself with this size knife, and I am sure I will enjoy these, for many Years to come, Excellent Job, and on a personal note, I feel like You made this just for Me, Thats how much I love it!!!
Thanks Again,
Charlie

PS This knife is right up there with the Cally, IMO.

I love my chaparral! It's the perfect hybrid of a sage1 and a kopa.
I'd like to add some more pics: carbonfibre-structure closeup made with a reproduction ratio of 1:1, and a comparison sage1-chaparall-kopa.

Hi MarcusH, A fellow Chaparrel Lover to be sure! Thanks for the comparison pictures, I think the size of this is perfect for a Gentlemans EDC, and the more people that hold one, or at least can compare the size to get a better idea of it's size, will definately think harder about buying one.

Hi All,
To say I'm still loving this knife is somewhat of an understatement. I particularly love the thinner blade, and especially the Carbon Fiber with its woven texture, it's fantastic, and gives a good grip! This is a very classy Gentlemans folder, which is equally at home in a pair of jeans, as well as a suit, or nice pair of slacks, and at 2.5 ounces, You'll barely know You have it on You, Feels lighter than it is! Did I mention, the blade steel is CPM S30V, it doesn't get much better than that, and talk about Sharp!!! Mabey at some point in the future, I can see a different Steel showing up! ZDP-189 or even S90v would be a dream!!!

I can't wait to see what other scale options come out next. Personally,I can picture a Blued Titanium handle on this knife, or even a Nice Blue Anodized Allimite! How about colored Titanium Bolsters, with Jigged Bone! This is a Gentlemans knife, right! I could go on and on with handle choices, but in the meantime, I already purchaced another CF strictly for the collection!

Well, I guess My excitement still shows, and has not diminished one bit about this knife, As I said, i can't wait for the next one with new scales,or a possibly a different steel!
I hope Everyone is Loving theirs, as much as I love Mine.
Just My enthusiastic 2 cents again!
Charlie

PS Thanks again Sal and Spyderco for this Fantastic Knife !!!1+1=2 Elated with My 2 Chaparrels

I also want to clarify...

My Chaparral is 100% flawless.

No grit, no scraping, blade is perfectly centered, it opens and closes with a nice click, opens up like butter & has no bends...

I've never had a Taiwan made Spyderco, but it seems to be my highest quality knife I have.

Received mine a short while ago, love it greatly !
Here are a few images of mine;

I'm a lanyard/fob kinda guy, but this knife lacks a lanyard hole,
so I braided the leather tightly around one of the legs of the wire clip and it seems to work fairly well;
I tried a similar thing on the small Calypso but wrapped around both ends of the wire didn't care for that as well, as the leather would slip up and down too easily, so I decided to go for just the one leg...

Image

in this shot you can see the wedge of leather that helps keep the skulls from sliding off, I wedge it into place, slip a piece of plastic between the wedge and leather braid, so I can then slice off any bit extra that extends past the skull's jaw...

Again, nice work to Sal and the Spyderco Crew !

Just wondering if anyone has a picture of a Native 4 (CF) next to the Chaparral?

Here are a few pics.
The Chaparral is about 1/4 inch smaller in blade and handle length. It's also a hair thinner (the Native 4 is very thin), but the blade on the Chaparral is definitely thinner.
I hope that helps.

Excellent...thanks! I love my native 4 a lot...and was wondering if it was worth getting the Chaparral. And the pics I think will help me decide. Just not sure yet which way they are going to swing me!

I dunno...I like the twill CF a lot and it's a far better clip position. and deeper carry which I like. But I like the no thumb ramp of the native. And I like the hefty solid feel of the Native too. And to me the Native it a small knife...so the Chaparral is tiny. Maybe I will wait...see if I can get a super good deal on a Chaparral.

Well, I just recently bought a Caly 3 CF/zdp to fill the role of small sheeple friendly folder. The Chaparral looks like it would have filled that niche well too. You guys make me want to buy one as well.

On a side note, my Caly 3 had a bit of that gritty problem when it arrived too. All I did was loosen up the pivot a bit, wash it thoroughly with hot soapy water, clean it out with WD-40 and canned air, and re-adjust the pivot. Problem was solved easily for that knife. I had thought maybe they do some finishing to the Carbon fiber after it's on the knife and some of the dust got into the tang area but I'm just guessing.
