RIT-dyed white spydies -- how are they holding up?
I figured I'd add what I know from dying Lacrosse heads with RIT dye to help some people. If you add salt to the water it helps the intensity of the color, because the water takes longer to boil, getting hotter, and that helps the dye seep into the material better. Also take it out of the dye, and rinse it off, and dry it then let it sit in a cool dry place for an entire day before using it. This is extra important with lacrosse heads, because it helps the nylon based plastic get its strength back before hitting people with them again. Some people prefer to place the dyed head in the freezer saying it helps.
There is a lot of stuff you can do with the dye, from simple fades, to full color dyes, to speckled dies and patterns dyed into things.

Depends what color you want. If you want black, it doesn't matter. If you want something else, you are going to have to experiment, but from what I've seen you shouldn't plan on dying yellow FRN with blue to get green. The colors don't mix that way.SecSpyral wrote:Just curious, does the FRN have to be white or can this dye be used on a bright yellow handle, like the salt series? Will the dye have problems in salt water?
I had emailed the owner of the black dyed G-10 Dragonfly and was informed it's been four to five months since the dye job with EDC and no signs of wear or fading. I dyed the handles on two of my Khukuris and after a couple weeks of EDC, there are no signs of fading. I kept my handles in the solution for about 20 minutes to get good saturation. Holding up very well. At worst, you can always dye it again but I doubt I'll ever have to.

i have some trans tint that woudl be fun to try out as i find it much better then rit dye

Foliage Green was standard on the Khukri.Monkeywrangler wrote:So, Spyharpy, what color was that G10 on the Kuhkri before it became black?
I am thinking of dying the Blue Manix2 to black...

Just to remind everyone, you can dye any color FRN (or, as I guess we see, G10) any color you want, as long as the resulting dyed color is black. :D If you want something other than black or dark mud brown, you need to start with white.Monkeywrangler wrote:So, Spyharpy, what color was that G10 on the Kuhkri before it became black?

I've done two with slightly different mixes (and results). If you can wait a bit, I could do a pic with both knives in it. The results are nice, either way.spyderHS08 wrote:Anybody dyed anything orange yet? Curious to see how that "tangerine" color looks on something that was white. Thats what I'd like to do sometime..

the RIT dye holds up well my two Spyderhawks are still pretty black but if they get rubbed alot the dye will come off. I wear them IWB and they are starting to show yellow again but nothing too bad. I'm sure if i didn't wear them IWB they would still be pitch black. It's only maybe 2-3 dollars for RIT and i can dye both spyderhawks at the same time if i want.

And re-dye them, too. It's easy, cheap and quick to re-do the dye job.VashHash wrote:the RIT dye holds up well my two Spyderhawks are still pretty black but if they get rubbed alot the dye will come off.
