I would be in. It would be nice if the blade stock was a little thicker.
If there is one thing I know, if they make it, it will be perfect! I have full faith in Spyderco to think of everything.

Agreed. This thread is inspiring me to revisit the native Chief.

To say I like Native Chiefs would be an understatement. I'll be buying my 7th Native Chief around Jan 4th if everything goes right. I'm missing the S30V model. I'd also like to buy a 2nd S90V model before they sell out.

I have a Native 5 in Maxamet. I wish that I had more of them, but I don't carry small knives that often. I really dig the larger knives, 4 inch blades and up and I have quite a few that I want to get. I keep buying fixed blades because they have 5, 6, 7 inch blades. My most recent purchase is one of the Hinderer EK knives. I have no plans to carry it, it is just a collectors item.

I own an older, Japan-made version of the Cold Steel Voyager XL (6” clip point blade). And although technically I could carry it, it would be bulky and slow to get into action. So I never carry it. Also, because its handle is SO long, it wouldn’t be as nimble or easy to control as a smaller folder, or a fixed blade with the same blade length. It could probably feel just right for me if I was 7 feet tall, with hands like The Big Show.

To be fair, a Native Chief XL with a 4.5” blade would probably still be fairly comfortable to carry and easy to get open, without having a ridiculously long handle.

Jim
I emailed 5x5 Solutions and asked if they would come up with a solution for fast deployment of the Native Chief. They said that they would soon. I don't have a date for the arrival of the part, but it should sell. They could design an opening tab for the Native Chief XL too!!!

Very cool! 👍🏻

I dunno guys. Are we sure about this idea? That handle is getting awfully big... a two-handed handle...here's a rendering of the Stretched Chief atop the current Chief...at this point, I'm inclined to go for a fixed blade...

To be fair, a lot of people out there would say that about ANY Spyderco knife model, regardless of size. I've heard someone say that about a basic Endura.

To be fair, I'm not sure that is fair, James. Spyderco makes plenty of non-weird designs.

Well, several, at least.

But back to the Stretched Chief, isn't there a reasonable limit to a pocket knife?

To be fair, I'm not just "a lot of people" I'm very familiar with the knife market and knife norms. That knife is not practical.

Hmm. It seems my post may have offended some people. I don't see how it could have. I wasn't trying to be snarky, I was making a real point. To people unaccustomed to Spyderco or to knives in general, any Spyderco looks like some type of weapon. That's a fact. I did NOT say anybody here is that way. Why take my post personally?

I'm not saying that I would necessarily buy a Chief XL. But if there are other people out there who would want one, why not? If I don't want one, I simply won't buy one. There is a market out there for mega-folders. How big that market actually is, I'm not sure. If Spyderco decides it would be worth bringing an XL version to the lineup, they'll do it. Otherwise they won't.

After many warnings from Taz, I'm going to bow out from Spyderco Forums. Hopefully the Spyderco Native Chief XL gets manufactured.

No offense here, either. I guess it all comes down to how many people would want one. If the market wants it, sure. I think it's too big for my pocket (and/or socks) but perhaps I'm the runtish minority. I still haven't purchased a Chief yet because it's "too big" for me. Clearly lots of people think otherwise.

God rest ye, merry gentlemen! May nothing you dismay.
Perhaps an extra large-ish Chief will somehow find its way
Into your pocket or your sock-drawer or into a sheath
Where you use it to make a Christmas wreath!

TBH, I've still yet to buy a regular Chief myself. I'm guessing it's the same size as my Police 4 lightweight, which is comfortable for me, size-wise, but is pretty much the length limit I would personally carry in a folder. Starting from about 4.5 to 5 inches, I prefer a fixed blade, as the handle length on a folder is longer.

Why haven't I bought a Chief? I'm hoping for it to switch over to Magnacut. Which probably isn't going to happen anytime soon, if ever. It would cost a lot more by then, too. Maybe I'll just pull the trigger and get a standard one before the end of the year...still got a week to go...

🤔

I say go for it! $168 really isn't a bad deal when you consider that the S90V/CF version was $245...

The Chief is a design worth owning without doubt! I do think that a MagnaCut variant will pop up in the next 24 months, but will be more sought after and come at a price closer to $200. All just wild speculation on my part of course.
So it goes.
