I bet that foliage G10 would take a nice medium blue dye....wish I had one to experiment with!

More likely you'd just get mud-brown or near-black, I think. Using the dye on colored material is more like mixing watercolor paints than applying a coat of oil paint.

I've always wanted my Spydies to match my pants. Add a satin low rider clip and my knives would be much less noticable in my pre-faded color jeans.

I would like a set of FRN scrap pieces to calabrate my RIT formulations before committing real knives.

My old joke about shopping for jeans to match my knives seems a lot closer to reality now.

Blue jean camo FRN would be so cool (hiding in plain sight).

Edit: Yeah, I know I can't spell. I need a spell checker here.

has anyone thought about mixing the rit dyes to make their own shades of colors?

I want a lime green. Perhaps a mix of yellow and blue in the right proportions could give that effect. Im thinking at least 2parts yellow to 1 part blue if not more yellow. Could be cool.....

We've been dying lacrosse heads like this for ages. If you want a fun effect, put some hot glue on the handle before dying it, then peel it off. Or simply fade the dye by leaving one portion in longer then the rest. If you take your time, and do it right you can do some amazing things with dye.

There is a "custom color" mixing chart on the RIT website that would get you started.

If you want to test before you go live, you can probably get a pretty good approximation of how FRN will dye by using white cable ties.

Well,
I did RIT-dye a few of mine. FRN just sucks the colour right in, G-10 wasn’t so fast to absorbe.

H1 Spyderhawk, and a D-fly (sorry about the velcro "hair" in the pics:eek :)

G-10 D-fly, I just LOVE this little thing! My first ever :spyder: was a SS D-fly, this is like going back to my roots :D

new clip, I used an Delica4 clip, ugly but works:

Looks good. What's that extra hole near the tail end of the knife, near the lanyard tube?

Could I get sample bits of FRN to experiment with?

Matching Spyderco knives to my current jeans would be expensive if using real knives to experiment. All clips for this experiment should be satin or wire. I love the idea of dying my scales to match my pockets.

i was going to do this but i dont have a spare white endura to play with or the dye so i thought i would throw it up here to see if anyone else is interested. a red/wite.blue dye job. dip 1/3 into the blue and 1/3 into the red and if you lower the scaes in slowly you should have nice clean lines of white on both sides in the middle. anyone??

I'm definitely going to have to experiment with this. I need some white knives!

I'm surprised no one has mixed the dyes to make there own crazy colors yet!

If you're not careful, you get mud/dung brown or similar... There's a custom color chart on the RIT website that suggests mixes.

I've read, but never tried the technique or even seen its results, that lacrosse players use hot glue to mask off parts of their sticks when using serial dye baths. I gather they mostly get a tie-dyed effect, but if you were careful I guess you could get more intricate designs.

You have sharp eyes :)

those are small tritium dots, on both sides. Just happen to have them lying around.. little stainless tubes, with a glass window, and inside there's a tritium vial.

I have only dyed G10 so I am not sure, but you have to stir the scale in the dye for best results. FRN is supposedly easier to dye but I am not sure how even the dye would take. It would definitely be worth a try you might get an interesting tie dye look.

Just curious, does the FRN have to be white or can this dye be used on a bright yellow handle, like the salt series? Will the dye have problems in salt water?

No clue about salt water, but the if you want a colored handle(blue, orange, green, etc) then the knife should be White FRN. I would only recommend dyeing a yellow handle to black, otherwise you would get brown trying to dye yellow to a different color.
