Which would you get?

#1

Post by Parkourdude »

Hey guys, your opinions would be much appreciated.

I'm in Australia and getting Spyderco's is going to be darn near impossible soon.

I have very limited options and I've decided between two knives.

Caly 3.5
Sage 4

Which would you get?

Thanks in advance. :)

Both are excellent knives, so you can't really go wrong with either one. Beyond that, it depends on your taste. Sage 4 is more elegant looking, and thus less intimidating to others. Caly 3.5 has 1/3" more blade, is a bit thinner and considerably lighter, and its blade is ground thinner behind the edge which makes it the better slicer of the two.

It depends on the use of the knife. Is this a collectible since they are about to be outlawed? I agree with The Deacon. But, I lean toward the Caly 3.5 because it is a better slicer. I would buy the Carbon Fiber version because it is 1] handsome (it looks like a man'sknife) and 2] it is flat ( it disappears in a pocket or when clipped).

Both are good, but I'd take the Sage 4, just because it's so nice to look at and handle.

If a longer blade won't get you in trouble, I would go with the Caly 3.5.

It's great in the pocket, has a half inch longer blade, is a great slicer, and is made of VG10 rather than S30V.

Are you looking for a user or a safe-queen?

While I love the Sage line, the IV is a fairly heavy knife. I much prefer the Sage I or II for every day carry.

The Caly line is really classic - and both the Caly and Sage evolved from the same design principles - they are sort of like "cousins" in the Spyderco lineup.

You can't really go wrong with either one!

Tough decision...

Both!

I guess if I really had to choose it would be the Caly 3.5 for the slimmer profile and longer blade.

I like my Caly 3.5 better, but many people love the Sage 4 better.

I say it is up to you.

If it was my decision to make, based solely on looks I would probably choose the Sage 4.

But I would like to handle them both first...actually handling/fondling a knife tells you a lot about it that looking just doesn't convey. So I would still be open to the Caly 3.5 until I'd fondled them both!

If you can get that Caly 3.5 with ZDP-189 steel then I would go for that in a heartbeat. Even if you can only get it in VG-10 I would again go for the Caly 3.5. My boss just got a Caly 3.5 with ZDP-189 and he's absolutely in love with that blade. I would take the Japanese steels offered on that Caly anyday over what's offered on the Sage >> you won't regret it.

Based on your comments so far I'll get the Caly 3.5. Then get the Sage 4 if it hasn't run out of stock later on.

I love the look of both of them and they'll be more like safe queens with a little edc on the side since having even the bug out in public is illegal...
