Return of Schempp collabs (Khukuri, Barong, etc.)

#1

Post by samdasnake »

Based on the suggestion of archangel, and the way comments seem to have been going I thought I’d expand this thread to include other Schempp collabs.

Who among you would be interested in a new run of the Schempp Khukuri, Barong, Tuff, etc? The Khukuri is one of my grail knives but I don’t see it mentioned much. Just curious about the interest for these collabs to return.

Sal, any plans to bring back any of the wonderful Schempp collaborations?

I would buy one in a heartbeat. That and the kris or barong.

I would be interested, but they really need a better clip situation. I swapped for a deeper carry clip, but I almost never carry mine for fear of losing it. Barong would also be of interest. I love those blade angles!

I'd be in for a khukri and barong. I always wanted to buy a barong and have it ground back further for more edge. Saw someone do it and it looked really good.

I was frankly disappointed that the Schempp Khukri came out Delica-sized. I really wanted to like the Barong as well, but that grind and the three-finger (for me) handle sunk that hope as well.

Is there ANY Schempp Spydie collab that is NOT iconic and a grail knife?

If you ask me, they should all be rereleased. Period.

TSA took my buddy’s Persian. I don’t know how those people sleep at night.

A Schempp Persian would be my first choice. A khukri might get me to buy if it weren’t too expensive.

Maybe we need an XL barong and Khukri with a grind that goes all the way to the handle.

I was a Schempp fan (Kris, Persians) until the mega-ricassos came along.

I'm half expecting Schempp's next blade to have more ricasso than edge. Can an all-ricasso, no-edge blade be next?

I'd love to know why that design choice was made - what's the benefit of an over-sized ricasso?

The Tuff is nice, and I like the Balance too, but I'm not a huge fan of most of the other Schempp designs. The Ethnic series never really appealed to me - seemed like they sacrificed pretty much everything for a passing resemblance to an ethnic knife. I guess I'm too much of a utilitarian? Or maybe I just don't get it because I haven't used one.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

On reflection, I've changed my mind. I'd like to see a Barong with a LARGER ricasso. Here's a rough sketch of what I'm thinking would be a big improvement over the current Barong (although the edge may still be too long), so here is a proposal for the Barong II:

The Tuff was a very unusual knife. I still I have scars on my thumb from open and closing that knife.

:) I assume very one knows what the fuller groove in the blade was for.

There have been quite many collabs between Ed Schempp and Spyderco in the past, but none since I joined Spydieville. Anyone know why they stopped? Solids facts preferred, if they are known.

There were several in the proto case at BladeShow, including a fixed blade barong/khukri(can't remember which).

I just want a Kris...
