It is a surprising model. I love it's CF texture much better than that of the Caly and even the peel-ply. You chose well, but perhaps not the best choice ;)
Enjoy the M4, it is very exciting to use, especially at lower angles.

How is the Superblue version? I have no experience with the whole Patina thing. I just love the grey G-10 though. How does the patina effect the knife? All I know is that its either formed naturally or its forced. Any benefits of it being forced? Is there a way to prevent the knife from ever forming a Patina? Pics?

Hadn't chimed in on this thread because I'd posted so many times previously, my thoughts about what makes the 3.5 so great. It gets more time in my front pocket than any other Spydie. The blade to length ratio is fantastic. The extra length and thin blade make it a great slicer. Wire clip, shape of blade, and ease of carry make this one a favorite. Funny I have the ZDP and Super Blue but never picked up the VG-10. After reading this thread guess I'll start looking. IMO one of best edc knives ever made. Thanks Sal for such a great design. BTW none of mine have been "gritty". I always oil the pivot area upon receipt. A GREAT knife and a must have Spydie. :spyder:

Patina doesn't effect the use of the knife at all, just prevents further rust like pitting that can harm the blade. You can make a very nice patina simply cutting a rare steak, apples, onions, potatoes, etc.

If you wanted to try to go patina-less, you'll have to rub down the knife with oil a lot with something like a Tuff-Cloth. The layer of oil will keep rust away.

Personally, if you're going to use it, just let it patina naturally. I love my super blue delica. At first I was super careful with it, then it started and I just went with it.

It also takes a very, very sharp edge.

The Leaf shaped blade on the Caly 3.5 is just the perfect blade design. I don't like the Wharncliffe blade because it's too agressive and you will cut things that you didn't mean to cut. I was opening a case of bottled water the other day with a Wharncliffe and accidentally clipped a whole in three bottles of water. Also the Wharncliffe is hard to sharpen without ruining the tip. On the other hand the blade on the Southard is one of the least agressive cutting edges because it curves up and away from what you are cutting. The leaf has the perfect shape to be an agressive cutter while not overly agressive and at the same time extremely efficient.

So because of this thread, I finally purchased a 3.5 in G-10 and recieved it today. I cannot describe how much I love this knife from the moment I took it out of the box. I don't think I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. I don't know why I waited so long to get this knife. All I can say is if you are on the fence, don't waste another second and get it. Thank you Sal for such a great design.

Another happy customer courtesy of some well-placed forum peer pressure! Now you know! And for your others out there on the fence, what are you waiting for? :D

You can kill a mountain lion with it and save your child. What other reason do you need.

I highly recommend one of these if you can find it! Still in awe and babying it, but I got it to be a user. Probably my sharpest Spyder out of the box.

I thought he just injured the mountain lion.

While looking at sale forums, I probably see 30 times as many Caly 3 CF's for sale. I don't think I saw the beginning of sales of the Caly 3 G-10 to know how long they sold for. I know the CF has been selling for quite a while. I wonder if there are more Carbon Fiber versions in the wild than the G-10.

Should be more CF. This variant is in production for much longer than VG10/G10 was.
Is this a hint that we need the sprint of VG10/G10 Caly3? Let's say in dark green color :)

The story about the Mountain Lion is why is why I bought my Caly 3.5 in the first place. After I saw that I said to myself I have to get one of these. And when I picked it up at my dealer's that day I put it in my picket where it has been ever since. And none of my other Spyderco's have seen the light of day since either because they are all in the safe.
I think I saw in Blade Magazine where Eric Glesser presented the Gentleman who used the Caly 3.5 to save his Son with a special edition Caly 3.5 at a banquet or something possibly at the Blade Show. Some of you can correct me if I'm wrong on that part.

I support any Sprints of Caly line. VG-10, PE, Green G-10, all suits me fine. They better plan for a large batch, this one will sell like hotcakes!
