Great shot! The depth of field makes it look like a giant emerging from the mist.

Essentially, yeah. It's an immature stinkbug.

It looks to be in the last nymphal stage.

Awesome find! His head is flattened down a bit, so it looks like you caught some cool shots in one of its defense postures too.

They’re getting more rare to see these days. Were you by chance exploring the Cape Cod National Seashore?
Yep, in the dunes on the way out to the Race Point beach, actually quite close to the road.

Theoretically they're in Vermont, but this was the first (and only) time I'd seen one in the wild!

As you can see by how large the sand grains are in relation to the snake, he/she was tiny, but that didn't stop it from attempting intimidation when I stopped to take pictures :rofl when I overstayed my welcome it tried to curl up and hide under it's self... I left before I forced the final act of playing dead.

A number of these guys are doing their pre-flights as I sit in the yard with the pups.

We had a common White Tail Dragonfly around our pond yesterday but it was moving around so fast I was unable to get a picture . Dan

That’s funny because I saw an ant having a snack on a horse fly yesterday! Most likely delivering it back to the rest of the ant colony. Made sure to get a shot for this thread. :grin-squint

Image

Actually, over the past few days I’ve taken a handful of pics for this thread.

Spotted a baby Fowler’s Toad while I was out fishing the other day.

And my niece spotted this caterpillar today while we were out fishing

Had no idea what type of caterpillar it was but after a bit of research I learned that it is a “Turbulent Phosphila Moth Caterpillar.” Some really cool colors on this one, in my opinion. Reminds me of the Boston Bruins!

And on the topic of snack time, I caught a video of a jumping spider catching a moth. I find spiders eating things oddly captivating.

Image

The video was already kind of poor quality to begin with, then all the cropping and converting only reduced quality further. Still the majority of the action is mostly visible.

Here a common yellow garden spider is sucking on a red wasp
that I swatted out of the air with my bare hand
and gently stepped on.

When I tossed the wasp into the web by my front door
Geraldine raced to it and secured it in a spun silk blanket.
Later, she retrieved the "cocoon"
and carried it to the center of the web for a snack.

We repeated this a number of times that summer.

Love that spider shot ! When I was a young kid I was running between rows of Corn to get on other side where some buddies were waiting . I did the Home Alone movie scene face first into a very large Garden Spider web . Buddies asked why I was screaming when I got on other side . Funny now but then it was horrific.
