New Endura back lock super stiff

#1

Post by behindyou »

Picked up a BNIB Endura at Palmetto State Armory. Stupidly didn't try before I bought, got home and the back lock is hard to engage. Strong hand thumb works fine, weak hand thumb won't disengage the blade. What are my options. FYI - the store is 4 hours away - we were traveling.

Contact Palmetto State Armory for a replacement, or contact Spyderco and talk to them about sending it in for evaluation. It could be a warranty issue. https://www.spyderco.com/service-suppor ... ty-repair/

It is hard to say what the cause is without seeing the knife. Some things that come to mind are the lock spring in backwards, the lock spring moved forward out of position, foreign debris in the lock. The locks are simple mechanically, so there isn't much that it can be. As Pokey said, I'd contact the seller about a replacement or contact Spyderco for warrantee work.

The Endura is my favorite knife in that size range and they are not problem prone.

The Stainless steel lockback Byrd I received recently was very stiff at first.
Can’t take it apart because it’s pinned, but I put it to use with some yardwork and it broke right in.

My experience with backlocks is that they break in with use.

I can’t be sure my advice will work for you, though.

Thanks for all the advice. I contacted Syderco CS - and we will see what transpires. I have been opening/closing it during meetings and it appears' to loosen up.

How experienced are you with back locks? They are made to be harder to open than liner and framelocks with a noticeable bias to close until you get past a certain point.

Did you try adjusting the pivot? If it is too tight it puts pressure where it shouldn't be. I'd start by loosening it, then gradually tighten (1/8 turn at a time) until I felt no side to side blade play.
