I know we will not see a new design but doesn't Spyderco own the Ocalot design?

Yes, they do. Otherwise, it never would have seen the light of day as a Spyderco.

I'd go for an Ocelot sprint run if they could do it as all screw construction. That way scale swaps would be feasible. Would love to see it with a full flat grind as well, but there's always Tom Krein for that. Ditching the Boye dent would be the icing on the cake. :D

All screw and flat grind would be great but I would guess that would require some retooling and might not be worth it for a sprint run.
I do not like the dent either but at least it works well on the ocalot.

Spyderco pays royalties to Tim Wegner designs... and since Tim now has his own company, and is making his own designs and knives (which include the Mouse, he can make it cause in fact he owns the designs) In order for Spyderco to make the Ocelot again they would have to begin paying Tim again, and sign a new contract, which I dont think will happen unless Tim leaves Bladetech.

Think of it this way... if Spyderco owned the Mouse... do you really think that Blade Tech would be allowed to use it? Heck no... They are making them because Spyderco was only liscenseing it from Tim... Which they are no longer doing... Same with the Ocelot.

Hi J Smith,

Not likely.

When Tim and Spyderco parted ways, Spyderco gave Tim all the rights to his designs.

Thanks for the update Sal.
Shame the Spyderco-Wegner knives are a thing of the past.
Might need to find another PE to have modded.

Ok, now I am totally confused. I know that's the reason there will never be another Spyderco C48, C49, or Mouse, but I thought the reason the Ocelot got produced was that Tim Wegner had sold that design to Spyderco outright. Worst part is, I could swear I heard that directly from you.

Sorry Paul,

Tim designed the knife with our factory manager at Spyderco. We were planning to make the knife in Golden. We had applied for patents (which were later retracted) and made a deal with Tim to make the knife as a Spyderco model.

While this was being planned, our factory manager left Spyderco and went to work for Tim setting up a knife factory for Tim.

Then Tim wanted to make the knife for us in his new factory. We were going to use a compression lock. We couldn't come to agreement on some quality issues so we dropped that project. We had made a deal to make the knife and I wanted to follow through with my commitment. We eventually made the knife in Seki with US parts.

Once we had honored our commitment, we gave the design rights to Tim, along with all of his other designs, with the exception of the round hole.

Tim began making his own designs in his own factory, but he used a different shaped hole.

Tim could make the Ocelot if he wants to, but we won't.
