Ultra Fine Ceramic Triangles: Feedback Please.
Ultra Fine Ceramic Triangles: Feedback Please.
Hi Everyone,
Spyderco is interested in getting some feedback from those of you who purchased the experimental run of Ultra Fine Triangles for your Sharpmakers.
So you've got it, you've tried it out, what do you think?
_____
My only critique is that the colour of the Ultra Fine triangles is too close to that of the Fine triangles. It would be easy to get them confused/mixed up. If technically possible, I would like to see the Ultra Fines in a different distinct colour.

The ultra fines are great.
A few years ago I was talking to an intructor of Iaido (japanese sword drawing), and he mentioned that since his katana came back from being polished he got a little nervous about putting his hand near the cutting edge.
I now feal the same way about the couple knives I have introduced to the ultra fine stones.
The colour isn't an issue for me. I assumed that they would be white and was going to use a permanent marker to colour the ends, and low and behold the arrived just like it.

The ultrafine stones get my blades keener than I ever imagined! Previously I was real pleased with the 204 and the edge I got from the fine stones. It beat what I could do with any other sharpener and I'm not good enough with my flat stones to keep the edge precise and true. These ultrafine sticks bring the edge to a new dimension. Pretty soon I'll be throwing out all my Gillette razor blades and begin shaving with my Spydies... <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

PS: Another color would be easier, but these red-tipped stones are just fine... "ultra fine"

I have been very pleased with them. One of mine arrived with a tiny chip out of the end, but it is VERY small and causes no problems.
The difference in 'grit' is very apparent when you feel the stones in your hand, so I do not think that the white color is a big problem from a using standpoint. However, from a retail standpoint a different color might help reduce confusion in some instances.
What I would really like to see know are some thin carbide steel rods that would replace the brass guard rods and allow me to 'steel' the edge with them instead of having to carry my Razor Edge folding steel with me in my bag.
The triangles are a very welcome addition to my sharpening gear. I hope that they make it into regular production. THANKS!!

Hey Carlos,
First, I think the color coding is just fine. I think it was Spyderholic called them "code red". In expectation of receiving mine I marked my fine stones with a permanent marker. Was'nt necessary.
Second, I'm still trying to learn sharpening techniques. I'm sure no expert.
So, I took my new Dragonfly PE, with a brand new Spydie-edge but not quite a shaver. With a few passes on the 204uf stones now it is.<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
I'm a believer. Thanks Spyderco.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

I really like the sharpness that can be achieved with the UF sticks. But I haven't tried any particularly difficult cutting to see how well the insanely sharp edge holds up, compared to the regular super sharp edge achievable via the F sticks.
My only "complaint" is that the UF sticks don't really have a place in the nice little box that is the 204 Sharpmaker. And if I get the D sticks, it's even worse <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.
I think they're worth keeping in the catalog. Sure not everyone will need it, nor will everyone want to get an insanely sharp edge, but there will be those who will always want their knives as sharp as possible. The same argument could be made for the D sticks, in that not everyone will need them. The D sticks are in the catalog; the UF sticks should be too.
The UF sticks are a great addition. I hope Sal and Spyderco decide to keep them around.
