First of all Rencres welcome to the Spyderco Forum :)
The Spyderco 303 Pocket stone like any sharpening device is only as good as the skill it's user has. There are many books out there on the subject of Sharpening but 2 of them that I highly recommend are "The Razor Edge Book Of Sharpening" by John Juranitch and the "Complete Book Of Sharpening" by Leonard Lee. Both of those books contain very valuable information on sharpening.
Now if you want to really learn sharpening in a "hands on" method then I highly encourage you to get the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker. That tool comes with a really nice DVD and booklet that also give you great information on how to properly sharpen knives and other edged tools as well. I'm not sure if Steve Botorff's website is still going or not. But he had a great sharpening website at one time but it's been a year or so since I've been on it. I'm sure if you use a search engine you will also find other good websites on Sharpening. Hey good luck and I hope you enjoy your stay here on the Spyderco Forum. Feel free to ask us anything you want concerning knives and sharpening. JD :spyder: O

I just set it on my lap and use it like a benchstone for sharpening knives.
When I'm doing scissors I use it like a file (scissors stationary and move the stone along the edge).
If you have to sharpen on a curve, hold the knife at the angle you want and guide the stone around (get a wicked edge on my kris like this).
The beauty of the 303MF is that it is small enough to use like a file but still wide enough to use my a benchstone on a straight edge (even if it does have to be braced).
