I scored a PE Flatbyrd the other day and this biscuit-brother is Sweet!
It has not left my right rear pocket since i got it a coupla days ago.... I don't even notice its there! ;) I've cut up plenty of cardboard / pumpkin bread/ etc...
the sabre hollow? grind on the wharnecliffe blade is real utilitarian and sheeple friendly.... ;) i've stropped it a few times....I like this steel..... :cool:
What a sweet lockup on this byrd! a tab/ compression lock that is ambi-friendly and Rock Solid. :cool: the pivot action was a little stiff in the beginning, now it's "broken in" and perfect...
I've never held a Spydercard.....but this Flatbyrd Rocks! well done Spyderco!
Comparison shots with a Carbon fiber Subcom F (by Potterma) and a SS Ladybug3...

I've been eyeing that thing for a while today.

Enjoy Brian, the design looks very interesting. I am glad the SpyderCard was kinda ressurected by this one.
I was lucky enough to get a PE SC a couple of years back, basically in 100% condition. Have carried it only a couple of times, most of the time it spends in the knife box.

Neat Brian, might have to pick one up. Imagine some of Potterma's scales would look really nice on one too. :D

Interesting. Is this the production model? When I first saw the prototype photos, I assumed the final version would have a brushed finish similar to that of the other SS Byrds. To me, it almost looks as if it missed the finishing stages of the production process. Maybe it will grow on me. Otherwise, the only other thing that immediately jumps out at me is the potential for injuring yourself if you reach into your pocket and manage to catch the tip of a finger on the exposed blade edge in the large hole in the scale. Also, any chance that there might be the option for a clip on this one in the future?

Congrats, and thanks for the pictures.

Mine's in the mail.

When i first saw the proto pix, it looked
like it might double as a cigar cutter too,
but now it looks as though the small hole
might be useful as wire stripping tool.

I wonder if it would look good polished to a mirror finish?

hey Cobrajoe, the Flatbyrd is still about 5mm thick and while it may "fit" inside the "bill" section of a wallet, I doubt it would fit inside a credit card "pocket"....
I believe it might be too big to carry comfortably in a wallet.... :rolleyes:

Padawan: this is a production piece (i got it from wildealz)....it comes "beadblasted" with that "matte" gray finish....but mine is kinda scuffed up from use.... IMO its highly unlikely for a finger to get cut reaching for the folded knife in your pocket b/c even the tip of my little finger won't fit inside the "aperture" of that largest hole on the handle and the blade....

while it doesn't have a pocket clip, there are 6 different holes u can affix a lanyard to... ;)

hey picobrain, i don't think it'll work for stogies... as the tang of the blade fills up about 50% of the largest hole.... :rolleyes:

i have just noticed theres no clip ?

is it designed to be a credit card knife carried in the wallet like the spydercard ?

Nice pics Brian.
Good to see the pivot is adjustable, the old card was about the best drop-opener ever.
Guess that the blade steel is even better, the original one had Aus-6.
Those Byrds are getting nice, don't they?

i do like the look of that. cant wait to get my hands on one. the only thing im wondering is how does the lock setup work out, is it easy enough to disengage the lock through the hole.

I gave my Card to my miwe for her birthdat.
She's got five Spydies now and a couple of them get used pretty serious.

I just might get me one of these Byrds for replacement.

Is the handle made from alloy or steel? Spyderco´s hp says alloy but many german shops say steel...I am confused. :confused:

Alloy would make it more lightweight but would also wear faster (the integral lock!!). What is your opinion/experience?

I think it's aluminium, given how hard it is to spyderdrop the thing open. Unfortunately, I can't find my magnets at the moment, so I'm not able to say for sure.
