The 'Mont-Bell' Spyderco

#1

Post by Ted »

Sometime ago I came across a post on a forum (British Blades, BladeForums, maybe another?) with this Spyderco. IIRC Sal posted that it was only made in Japan for a Japanese outdoor shop. Does someone here remember on which forum that post was?
The handle is the FRN pro-grip one, with inserts but with a slightly different blade shape.

(Senate - I noticed I posted my first thread to which you replied in the off-topic - didn't mean to do that, so I deleted the thread there...)

I don't know, but the blade shape is pretty cool. Mont-Bell makes good kit, too.I forget the name of the Japanese on-line store, but I think I saw something similar not too long ago whille looking at one of the threads on here.

Thanks Kristi, but the link almost raises as many questions as it answers. Sal apparently was aware of it's existence, and I'm guessing from what he said that, at least for sale in Japan, it was done with Spyderco's knowledge and consent. But, if that is the case, something obviously went wrong, as the knife still appears to be for sale in the US through the MontBell North America website over three months later.

As for the knife, looks a bit like a cross between a Delica and a Caly Jr.

TKC - I was at work, but I'm also a lot more cautious now about labeling something a fake than I use to be. I can still taste toes from the Harrier incident. :o :D

Paul,
Sal was aware that our maker in Japan has permission to sell Spyderco models as our Distributor there, but the agreement is that the models are only sold in Japan and not exported elsewhere. As for the Pilica, we were not aware of it's existence specifically and were unaware of it being sold here. Permission is given to our maker, not to Mont-Bell. Hope that clears that part up.

As for it still being for sale... that's new news. We'll look in to it.

Basically, it's the same handle outline as the C01/C03/C05/C08/C13/C33/K. That handle shape has been proven to be very versatile to different blade shapes, so no surprise that this 'leaf' shape fits it well also.
I wonder if it has Spyderco stamped in the tang?

Ted,
No SKU, because it was never intended to be sold outside of Japan.
