The Flight is right

I received my new Byrd Flight today. It is a great knife. It is burly like my Manix. There is absolutely no play in the blade and it is well made. I am a happy camper. What a bargain.

I haven't bought a Byrd knife yet. They look like a good deal. And buying at least one helps to support the best knife company :D

So... I think I'll have to give myself the Byrd

I have been doing some more tests with the Flight and it is performing well on the rope tests and whittling. I am still carrying the Meadowlark and am starting to wonder whether I will give it up or not as I only bought it for testing. The more I think about it these are great entry knives for tyro users/collectors and given the SS handles they would make great little presentation gifts suitably engraved.

Enjoy your new knife.
I found all the Byrd models to be very nice looking, however, the Meadowlark and the Flight appeal to me most. I understand that the Meadowlark is about the size of a Delica, is the Flight sensibly bigger?

Yes! The Meadowlark is similar to the Delica in size and feel whereas the Flight is 1" longer overall but close to 25% larger in looks and feel. Of course the Cara Cara is about 2" longer overall and similar to the Endura in size and feel. The other is the "Harrier" with the Micarta scales (Sal said they are looking for another manufacturer) which is about 1-1/4" longer than the Meadowlark overall but feels very hefty.

Thanks for clearing this up. Looks like the Meadowlark is closer to my prefferences (although I like the way the Flight looks more). Too bad they don't come in G-10 and ZDP-189 :P
The Harier didn't hit the spot, but hey, it was their first model. Not all newcomers can be Workers from the very start ;)

I already got the second Byrd knife, the Crossbill, the first was Cara Cara.

What I have to say is that Spyderco managed to built GREAT knives for a very affordable price! Fit n Finish is great, truly comparable to Spyderco knives, the steel is very good, both hold edge very well.
I already forwarded the CC to me colleague, I got ordered myself another one. There is no blade play, maybe just some 0,025 mm what I consider as a good result.
Only one thing I would like to change is the clip holes, why not to make a pair on the other side for lefties, too? I think the knives would be ambidextrous, but for. example only tip up, or only tip down. I think the price would stay the same, because there would be still two sets of holes on the knife, just on the other side.

The only complaint I have is with the handles. The stainless steel is slick. A little texturing or grooving would be nice.
My son made off with my Meadowlark but he is not getting this one.
It amazes me how well made these Byrds are for $20. They are tighter than some of my Spydies.

Was the flight based on an old Spyderco design?

It just so happens that I was searching the forum for byrd topics today. I recently ordered the Crossbill, and Cara Cara from NG, and today sold my Meadowlark.

I mentioned this in another thread but no one has addressed it or corrected me.
It seems that the byrd’s have better blade steel than the AUS-6 on some current SS :spyder: 's (although I believe this will change soon).

Sal said they have a Rc of 61 with no brittleness. They’re well built and have great ergonomics. Looking forward to the colored ones.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Those Byrds marked 440c are actually 8Cr13MoV which is similar to AUS8 which would make it better than AUS6 which would probably read 6Cr13MoV. All new Byrds that were marked 440c will in the future be marked 8etc. I don't believe there is any move to change the actual steel just the name.

Yes! Sal said they were testing out at 61 but tests were still continuing. I don't know if Sal actually said there was no brittleness as all SS have some brittleness dependant on the heat treatment. Sal may have been referring to my comment that "real" 440c at 61 would be brittle or over-brittle if you like and that the 8etc did not show that type of brittleness.

Thanks JDEE,
I was on that thread with you so I knew about the 8etc (still love that term usage). being marked 440c, and the stamping change. I was refering to a possible change in SS :spyder: 's.

Thanks for setting me straight on the Rc testing. :) Life is one long learning process.

I think, I stand to be corrected, Spyderco were thinking about using 440 series stainless could have been 440c (the real one). I think I read it another thread maybe someone out there can recall.
