Was recently working with a few marines in Hawaii heading for deployment in Darwin Australia for 6 months.
Knowing I was from Darwin one asked what gun I used for crocodile protection in Darwin

“ I’m a knife guy”

Was met with a bewildering look……

I had a Sheriff ask if I had a knife on me,to pry a bullet out of a door frame. When I handed him my Police Model he stared at it and asked why I needed a knife so big. Of course I responded "why not"? He was obviously not a knife guy. I'm glad he didn't break off the tip.

I brought up my daughter as a knife person.

Totally off topic, but this kind of "heavily swedged sabre grind tip" - I have it on my old FRN Native - imo is great for such non usual prying tasks while still being pointy enough!
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

I would think most people on this forum would be considered the "knife guy" in their locale. I certainly am myself. My nephew just had a 13th bday, I asked mom if he could have a knife, said yes, he now has a Buck bantam in the mail!..

it always makes me laugh when someone asks for a knife and then asks why i need the knife they just borrowed because they needed it.
Has literally happened to me as well.
Yup. The lack of self awareness is staggering. "why do you carry a knife anyway?" "So I can loan it to you?"

That or they ask you why you carry while opening a package with a open pair of scissors with fingers on the bare blade. 🤣

Thankfully where I work now, many folks carry a knife. No real "knife people" that I've noticed yet. Recently a coworker was interested in my native chief, so I let him try it out. He liked it so much he bought his own! So there's another potential "knife guy". He's the "firearms guy" already though. People come to him for advice on builds, optics and reloads, dunno if he has time for another hobby.

Yep, but I am not the knife-loaner-guy. Get your own, you’ll not break mine. Learned that lesson for the final time when a knob cut wire ties with my mini striker auto. Took some doing to sharpen out that damage. 154cm is not K390…

I'm definitely known as "the knife guy" at work. One of my former managers used to jokingly call me "Rambo" in reference to the combo edge Native I used to carry as my work knife :rofl

I think many of my coworkers think it a bit odd that I'm into knives, and maybe even a little scary—a former supervisor was especially critical of my carrying "weapons" to the workplace, even though we are all issued boxcutters by the company.

But I think media like Forged in Fire has sort of normalized it a bit. I'm not a huge fan of the oftentimes sensationalistic presentation of knives in the show, but I can't deny that it's helped the knife hobby gain some acceptance in the mainstream. In addition, I've always tried to demonstrate safe/responsible knife use in the workplace, and there have been many times when a proper knife has proven to be very valuable in a work situation where a boxcutter blade just isn't robust enough for a particular cutting task.

I mentioned this show in my post as well. But I totally agree with sensationalistic presentation though. I've talked with quite a few people who figure that's a common ground for knife discussion, which is fine by me...but the show tends to lead people to think that every Damascus finished blade is meant to chop through concrete and remain razor sharp, and then they ask why I don't carry any Damascus blades haha. They fail to realize there is so much more to it. But hey, at least it's better than them not knowing what Damascus even is.

I recall one time back in the mid-to-late ‘90s, I was attending a class, and during lunch break I was using a Victorinox Spartan SAK to cut an apple. A couple of people sittting at the same table said they hoped I wasn’t going to go “Jason” on them. One of them even made that whispery “Chh-chh-chh-chh-chh hah-hah-hah-hah-hah” sound, like on the original Friday the 13th soundtrack.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but I think this is just the spirit :

Same, usually 4.
I work in Maintenance at a Manufacturing Plant so there are several folks that carry a pocket knife. I found one on a machine and no one on shift had misplaced one. I took it home, cleaned it and sharpened it and the next day a guy from the other shift said it was his and described it. He looked at it after I had cleaned and sharpened it and said he needed to misplace it more often.
