Mr. Glesser, may I ask: Any plans for a longer blade in 2 mm bladestock?

Sal, let me ask directly, maybe you find the time and would like to reply:

Did you ever fundamentally contemplate creating a knife featuring the thin bladestock of the Chaparral (so around 2mm), but with a blade longer than 3 "? [EDIT: In "slicey" FFG (not sabre / hollow like the Centofante for example)]

Are there any plans for such a design?

Maybe you noticed the poll I started a while ago (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82492). Looks like 74 % of the voters would be generally interested in such a knife, only 17 % not (of those who like longer blades generally, 10 % didn´t care for longer folders anyway)

I think the Chaparral (ideally, but of course other designs in thin stock too) would really be great in a second, longer version. Imho a slicing-oriented blade profits more from beeing longer than a thicker, more hard-use one.

I am aware that of course the risk of breaking a long, thin blade is something to consider, especially if such a knife will be used by people who don´t know what it was designed for (slicing, not crazy hard use).

The Centofante3 is 3 inches of 2mm VG10.

I would like to see a 3.5 inch folder with 2mm stock myself. Maybe a Stretch? ;)

Right, but sabre / hollowgrind. I mean ffg, will edit that in my op, thanx!

I'd love to see a Centofante 4 sprint in FFG. In K390. :)

Yes, would be cool... but even better for me personally would be a longer, thin bladed model with also a slim and THIN handle.. like the Chap.
Just wanted to try and ask directly if Sal ever even thought about such a model or maybe has plans already, or if there are reasons (technical or economical) that speak against such a design from an experts, makers and designers point of view.

Hi Sal,

thanks a lot for your reply! Appreciate that!
So I´ll just enjoy my little Chap further on, it´s a great knife in UNDER 3 " bladelength also and I am glad to own one :)

A while back someone floated the idea of doing sprints in standard steels but in "afi" grinds. I suppose if that was a thing, you could ask for a sprint in a different grind, too.

We already see non-standard grinds in exclusives (like the Fradon HG Manix). If there was enough of a market for it, I wonder if someone could ask for an exclusive in a different blade stock, or if that's too much of a change to request?

That`s interesting, thanx for the hint! Honestly never heard of the Fradon HG Manix, will look into that.

Technically I guess especially in backlock knives it would probably be quite easy to make a thinner bladed version of an existing model (of course I don´t know what the costs for the manufacturer would be if several pieces would have to be produced in a thinner stock). Don´t know if there is a chance that this will ever happen- As I have mentioned several times already: Maybe there would be some risk for the reputation of a brand like Spyderco if customers who don´t know a lot ot knives and how to use them properly would begin to break thinner blades by accident. And I think just a few reviews or videos of a Spyderco that broke could be really bad for the reputation. People tend to remember such things ("Spydercos break!! ") and often times do not bother to look closer and find out that a knife designed to be a very good slicer is even less a prybar than most knives are anyway...

Thanks for the link!

Another example that comes to my mind: Native 5 in S90V/CPM 154 composite: Sabre grind instead of FFG (does not make much sense to me personally in such a short blade that has quite thick bladestock anyway. But that's not the topic here).

I figure producing a run of an existing knife in another grind is less complicated than to do so in thinner stock when it comes to production. Different grind means, you can keep everything the same, just grind the blade differently. Different bladestock on the other hand would mean you'd have to adapt other parts of the knife too...
