I voted for the back lock, and I have to agree that front/mid/back locks are pretty much back locks.

I have no experience with the compression lock, so really can't comment on it.

I've had liner locks fail on me before, but they were not knives from Spyderco (the company shall remain nameless). So ...

Wow, quite a lot of love for the Lava among all of you. It certainly gives me something to think about, but man that is one hefty hunk of steel for so small a knife.

Also, thanks for the thoughts about the Dragonfly. I overlooked that model when searching for the smaller knives.

Okay, I think I get it now.

Sharpen at 30*, and maybe take a couple of light swipes at 40* (white rods) to remove the burr, and basically call it good?

I also hear talk about stropping with black and green compounds on a leather strop. Any thoughts about the usefulness of this?

Okay, I'll admit to being confused here. In watching the DVD that came with the sharpmaker I was pretty sure Sal used the 40* angle, and stated that the 30* was for the back bevel (which I don't throughly understand yet).

So, I was under the (possibly mistaken) impression that Spyderco knives are ...
