Steel wise, for edge retension, MBS-26 tested better (in our lab) than any other stainless kitchen knife steel we tested. That's why we use it.

Here's the deal:
The :spyder: 204 works great for all kinds of oddball things, especially serrations and hawkbill blades. It puts a wicked finished edge on anything, provided you use the right angles.
However, the 204 medium (brown) stones are just not agressive enough to repair a bad or really ...

I believe that a smaller hawkbill (think: Cricket Stainless) would be a *wonderful* EDC. A blade about 2 - 2.5", frame lock, thin blade and stainless handles for starters. I would keep this blade on my person while I *slept* were it available. I would buy three today sight unseen.

I like to take the edge to 30 degrees (15 per side) or less.
Then I strop on 250, 300 and finally 600 grit Aluminum Oxide wet/dry paper on a mouse pad to smooth out the shoulder and the edge.

To clarify. When you use a stone, you get the angle needed and push the blade edge first.
When you strop, it is the opposite, you "pull" with the spine first, or "edge trailing", and you keep the proper angle (usually close to what you used on the stones). This is usually done on canvas, leather or ...

Serrations remove material in a hurry, they work better on anything tough.
Unfortunately they can be too destructive to softer materials or in making precise cuts. IMHO, you need both. That's why I think the dyad was a neat design.
