Re: Sharpening S110V

Canazed9. It's all good man. I think insanely sharp, highly polished edges often get too bad of a rap from the toothy edge mafia (humor), and I say this with decades of cutting rope under my belt, with a solidified opinion that a toothy edge not only outperforms but outlasts a polished edge. Ankers...

Re: Sharpening S110V

The problem in general with polished edges on rope is they will start sliding across the rope instead of cutting once they lose the bite and that happens a lot sooner with a polished edge than with a coarse edge. That's all anyone needs to take home from all this. My data says differently, both of ...

Re: Sharpening S110V

When I stated that, Bloke suggested a test, a test that would result in the polished edge sliding off the rope like a dull knife. It didn't happen. I did the test, I posted the video. David David! I’ll reread my post but I think I said I was offered a challenge and it didn’t go well for me. The kni...

Have a nice day.
Thank you, I will and I heartily encourage you to do the same. I'm sure if you try you can exert your will and keep this a safe space free from opinions that disagree with yours.

Re: Sharpening S110V

Hmmmm Looks like a new set of tests w/o waiting for the results of the last requested test. The new tests will a long time to accomplis with the "game cleaning" requirements. You can "put it back on me" all you want - the tests will be on video, the toothy edges will be sharp. I like how you carefu...

Re: Sharpening S110V

I have a number of times over the years if you do the research. I'm no more interested in it than you are. David Perhaps since you are doing nothing more than trolling. Of course. That's the watch word of the day here. I give my personal experience, someone suggests a test. No one says a word. I co...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Bottom line is in my controlled testing over a wide range of steels a coarse edge will out cut a polished edge by a very large amount as in HUGE amount percentage wise. I have seen as much as 400% + difference in favor of coarse edges. The difference is so high and consistent that I stopped testing...

Re: Sharpening S110V

David, no one is denying sharp is sharp. I didn't see anything special or mind blowing about a sharp polished edge cutting rope. Welcome to the club. It's true Some people can't get a sharp polished edge because the crush or round the apex while polishing. Yet conversely some people think you can o...

Re: Sharpening S110V

If you really want a hard test for your knife, try different edges out slicing skateboard griptape. It's basically just low grit sandpaper with an adhesive backing. I used my SE Tasman Salt to grip over 30 skateboards. Never saw any edge damage. Tried an Opinel too since it was a cheap beater. Low ...

Re: Lum Tanto non sprint?

I'm also surprised there isn't demand for tantos. I deeply desire one with a compression lock. The natural g10 doesn't appeal to me, nor does the liner lock. Serious question: What is the appeal in the tanto design? When I look I see an awkward design that has corner snag built into the cutting edg...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Although I believe the negative aspects of having an extremely sharp highly polished edge are often exaggerated, when it comes to highly abrasion resistant rope, the toothy edge WILL outlast the polished edge, not just outperform it. I've seen this countless times. A dull hacksaw cuts rope better t...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Depends on what you're cutting. If you're push cutting chery tomatoes or slicing poly rope or hacking through jungle with a machete you'll want different edges. Not in my experience. In my experience a toothy edge can out cut a polished edge, but it can't outlast it, regardless of what you're cutti...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Try to challenge yourself to get shaving sharpness off your coarser stones. If you use a light touch and consistent angle you can get shaving sharpness and even tree topping sharpness at 200-400 grit. Tom Kreins edges were the first experience I had with these edges, and it opened my eyes to how sh...

Re: Sharpening S110V

David, I'm a polished guy like you, I like the finesse but it's not the best edge for everything. If we could spend a day cutting fish with Lance the polished edges would loss their bite faster. Polished is push cutting, toothy is draw cutting. If you're forcing the edge straight down in the rope t...

Re: (Q) should Spyderco publish there Rockwell Hardness of there knives or should they do a “MAX’ line where they harden

How difficult is it to be accurate within a range? How important is perfect accuracy anyway? Is a disclaimer not an option (note: rockwell hardness may very from blade to blade)? For a third time I'll state that I don't think this is a big deal, or very important. I also would never tell a company ...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Hi canazes, you’re not really going to see much performance difference on a push cut like that. If you want to get a real feel for the difference take a few feet of hard 5/8” polypropylene rope and make a couple dozen cuts through it on a cutting board with each type of edge. Slicing/sawing cuts. T...

Re: Sharpening S110V

Brother, I stand corrected! This has not been my experience with hair whittling edges off UF Spyderco stones on synthetic or natural fibre ropes. I can only think the actual edge may not be as refined as the polished bevel but I have NO IDEA. Perhaps I should go back to the drawing board. Many than...
