Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Interesting. I may have to do a versus of diamond emulsions and standard compounds on a super steel. I could just never get s110v scary sharp with my Stropman compounds like I could with the diamond emulsions. This may not even matter to most people thou. I'm crazy and am not happy unless my knife ...

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Very good write up Bloke. I've never tried the Dialux compounds. Just Bark River's compounds and I settled on the Stropman compounds. I quickly graduated to diamond emulsions because of my love of super steels. I didn't find that CrO and such worked well if high vanadium content.

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
This thread has really brought up some very interesting aspects to think about concerning stropping and final finishing on our knife edges. The thread is timely for me because lately I've been taking a look at other possible stropping materials.

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Does this test show that sharpening skills are vastly important then the specific steel performance? If I do an avg job sharpening S30v, and you put a perfect edge on BD1 - you will get better performance. Perhaps I should get some UF rods instead of a new knife???

Re: Can you trust Japanese Steel?
I just did a cut test on an Endura 4 made in 2016. That batch of VG10 was definitely gtg. I have no worries from Spyderco products.

An angel came to me in a dream, he blasted the most beautiful brass trumpet I had ever seen. It was glorious. The sound was so loud I thought my ear drums would explode. When he stopped all I could hear was ringing. Then clear as day I heard the names Sal & Eric Glesser whispered in a soothing ...

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Today I got to a Spyderco Endura 4 FFG VG10. I was expecting around or under my 154cm results but was pleasantly suprised. KME to 1500 grit diamond, finished with translucent Arkansas, and stropped thru .025 diamond on balsa. This thing was probably the sharpest I've ever had a knife. It wouldn't ...

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
I owned a few D2 Benchmades back in the day and they performed well.
Have you ever tried testing Queen's D2? If not I have a stockman you could borrow. It also took an incredibly nice edge for me, but I never used it hard enough to get a good idea of its edge retention.

Native 5 without question. I prefer the LW models. It's the only 3" or smaller knife I carry. Had a Delica, gave it to my Dad. He loves it and he has bear paws too. Can't go wrong with either but I'm a choil type of guy. The N5 feels like it was made for me.

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Today I sharpened one of my buddy's knives. It was a Benchmade Adamas in D2. I had no experience with Benchmade's D2 so I did a cut test. Same M.O....KME, 17.5 dps, 1500 grit diamond and stropped to .025 micron.
Let me say I was blown away. Benchmade knows how to heat treat D2. I got 936 cuts ...

Re: Why does CPM S90V get such high marks?
I have something similar to the Edge Pro and I worry a little about how thick my stones are and how the stone thickness will affect my angles. I don't know a good solution outside of trying to use stones the same thickness and recheck everything with the sharpie method.
Buy an angle cube. $30 ...

Re: Best steel for sharp edges
In short, take the generous offer of an Edge Pro demo, then buy one, it's money well spent!
P.S. buy an "angle cube" too, it seems a bit OCD, but will make it easier to confirm true edge angle and to match angles when re-sharpning.

Very nice work! Looks like Pete needs to ditch his Worksharp for a KME though....for anyone that likes the idea of a somewhat awkward ozzy nerd trialling his survival skills overnight, then Pete's "dickhead survival" is too funny and a must watch, I enjoy all his channel though.

I, too, use the edge pro with diamond to reprofile. I haven't found a faster sharpener that is hand-powered. I get it sharp with that and touch up with a Sharpmaker. I can get any blade ridiculously sharp that way.
As far as steels go, VG10 has been a bit of a disappointment. Like the OP ...

Re: Steel Retention, Stropping & Garage Science
Well, I felt like punishing myself today. I just did my S110v PM2. The edge was KME 17.5 degrees per side thru 1500 grit diamond then stropped thru .025 micron diamond on balsa. I left the translucent Arkansas out as it does nothing to S110V.

Re: Best steel for sharp edges
So my take on this is that the Sharpmaker is about a $50 system that is probably the best bang for the buck at that price range by a long shot. But if you up the ante to $200 or so you can decide if you want the KME or Edge Pro or who knows what else and up your game. And if you are a real edge ...

Re: Best steel for sharp edges
For me I feel it comes down to sharpening equipment. U got a sharpmarker...vg10 & 154cm all day. I finally bought a KME and diamond compounds for stropping... M390 & S110V are amazing and get stupid sharp too. Upping ur equipment ups ur sharpening game. But it's a slippery slope. What's enough ...

I'd say the manix has a bit more yellow in the mix.
