Re: Dr Larrin Thomas Interview with Bob Shabala of NSM
I'm grateful for the work that luminaries like Bob, Larrin, and Shawn have put in keeping the community informed. My one tiny wish would be to keep the "V" in the nomenclature, so "NSM-90V". I like how the numbers in these steel grades denote the approximate percentage of vanadium, and I think the ...

Re: Self defense knife under 3.5”?
1. The most important thing about a knife is that you have it with you when you need it.
2. The most important thing about a knife for self defense is that you do not drop it. It can't be something that can easily be knocked out of your hand, You don't to be rummaging around on the floor ...

Re: Any Truck Drivers here?
I'm friends with a gentleman on Instagram who's a career truck driver in Canada, and collects knives. I sent him a message to see if he can lend his expertise here. I think he's gotten plenty of mileage (ha ha) out of his Delica.

Re: Sage 5 LW vs Manix 2 LW: Surprised by which I liked more.
My wife memorably commented that the Manix 2 LW "feels like Lego, in a good way." I agree. There's something kind of fun about it. Totally a subjective feeling, and I get why someone would feel otherwise.
Her favorites are the UKPK and the Para 3 LW, so this is definitely a pro-FRN/FRCP household ...

Re: Colors - Talkin' Story - Marketing
I felt that colors changed the "sinister" attached to knives and said, "I'm carrying a cutting tool" and doesn't look like you are trying to hide something.
This is the most important factor. The brighter and more toy/tool-like, the better. Of course this has maximum effect on a Spyderco ...

Re: Small Blade For A Parkour Athlete
Cool thread, Ben. Thanks for bringing us in on this interesting use case. I also carry a serrated ARK when I'm out running
If we're talking Spyderco fixed blades, it kind of sounds like a Street Beat might suit. Or perhaps a Ronin? Am I correct in surmising that self defense is a ...

Re: First Wharncliffe ... been thinking about these for a while
Anyone care to share their experiences and impressions (favorable :) unfavorable :( ) with Wharncliffe blades?
I have a Q-Ball, and my wife has a Delica Wharncliffe. So my experience is limited to Seki-made Wharnies with VG10, but the impression is overwhelmingly positive. The factory grinds ...

If the other retailers died, as they surely would, then ebay and amazon control all delivery, and they are both profoundly anti-gun. Guns and knives overlap, so there is every reason to believe they would leverage that power "politically."
Very true. Amazon has already stopped most ...

Re: First Spyderco for Little Brother
The Native 5 Salt is pretty much the perfect allrounder. Plus the only thing on your list that comes close to it in ergonomics is the Para 3, but to me the backlock and LC200N of the Native are more reliable in outdoors situations.
I agree with everyone on the Native 5, but since he’s not ...

Re: Spyder Classics: The C-54 Calypso ( the big one)
VIVI I know exactly why that C-54 Calypso didn't sell better. It was truly a victim of Spyderco's explosive success during that time period ( late 90s/early 2000s). That was about the time the JD Smith, Viele, Peter Herbst, and about 4 others I could mention that all hit the market at about the ...

Re: First Spyderco for Little Brother
For whittling I found a long, straight section in the edge much more efficient than a more curved edge: So my best whittling and wood working Spydie is the Stretch 1 (discontinued, but perhaps still to be found). A very compact folder (smaller than a PM2!) that offers a lot of cutting edge ...

Re: First Spyderco for Little Brother
If it needs to be smaller I'd go with some version of the Para 3 or Native 5. Sage 5 would be fine too but I consider those to be more of a Gent's knife for some reason. Sage 5 LW might be a good choice
Otherwise the Wolfspyder or Brouwer might be fine too. I don't own either of those. So didn't ...

Re: Spyder Classics: The C-54 Calypso ( the big one)
I have the brown G-10 sprint and fall in love with it every time I carry it. The standout characteristic for me is the slimness–-I wonder if it would be possible in a lightweight.
For some reason, the clip also makes a fantastic sound when I take it out of my pocket! Just a joy to carry.

First Spyderco for Little Brother
The bug bit my bro! We were building a fire together, and he borrowed my PM2 to feather/shave tinder while I batonned bigger stuff with a fixed blade. We were dealing with a lot of damp wood, and he found the wood-processing utility of having a knife compelling enough to (finally) want one for ...

Re: Spyderco MSRP Increase for 2021?
Spyderco's got to keep up with inflation, just like the rest of us!
I reckon these price increases are mostly painful when you don't get a raise at your job. May you all get a nice raise and keep up with MAP in 2021

Re: What do you think of metal handles?
I think aluminum is underrated in the knife community. I haven’t had the pleasure of handling an aluminum Spyderco (anyone have an old Lum Chinese they want to give me?), but I’ve been happy with aluminum-handled Benchmades. The finish will take a ding or two, but that adds character to a user knife.
