Re: Computer Question: Is this virus or what?

Windows is a kluged, patched together assemblage of programs built on a 40 year old operating system that wasn't very good to start with. It has no inherent security and the rambling structure — grown bloated and complex — has many vulnerabilities to malware (malicious programs). The Mac OS was base...

Re: Computer Question: Is this virus or what?

Not shutting down normally can corrupt some system files and drivers. Restarting usually fixes this by rewriting (copying) the files from the boot volume. If those files got corrupted on disk, they would need to be restored. However, being you have Windows, you have issues. If you reformat the hard ...

Re: A Visit to the Mother Ship (SFO)

A little correction, if I may? The WTC steel was used for the Twin Towers inlay in the WTC knives... One of the staff mentioned that the ball bearing in the lock was from WTC steel. He may have misspoken. He also said Sal and Eric were in Japan. Perhaps I'll get to meet them some other time. I thin...

Re: Spyderco ARK Proto

I would offer the opinion that knives of this sort are primarily functional tools designed for a particular need, hence, aesthetics take a far back seat to function and useability. FRN is a better choice here than G10.

A Visit to the Mother Ship (SFO)

Wednesday, on our way back home from Boulder, we stopped at Spyderco in Golden for a look around and drool session. Although it was dark, cool and rainy outside, it was light, spacious and welcoming inside. We were the only visitors for a while, so we got a good tour of the store, the World Trade Ce...

Re: Vegan and Vegetarian Diet questions

In regards to the evolution and foundation for bias and cognition in general, this is a deep and rich area of study. Now of course unless you want to argue special creation or some kind of mind/body dualism, all of our behavior is of course evolved. On a basic level, it isn't that difficult to unde...

Re: Poll - Flipperized Native 5?

Yep. Different folks like different things. I guess, for me, it stems from the distinction of a knife as a tool and as a weapon. Sure, tools can be used as weapons, but from a design viewpoint I like to see the separation. A "tactical" (Weapon) folding knife sporting flippers and assisted ...

Re: Vegan and Vegetarian Diet questions

But SEF asked general questions about a vegetarian diet... Which I answered sourcing the literature. . No, you didn't. Vague references and an appeal to simplistic and inaccurate evolutionary processes isn't "sourcing the literature." "Evolution." That word does not mean what yo...

Re: Poll - Flipperized Native 5?

Emerson Wave. Speed Asssist. Outburst. Those are quick opening systems to get the blade deployed as fast as possible. Why? The Spyder hole or thumb studs are effective one hand openers that don't require a mechanical leverage device or ball bearings. If it takes 0.67 seconds to swing open a non-assi...

Re: Poll - Flipperized Native 5?

Not interested. I think the Native is a finely integrated design and adding a flipper is not effective or necessary and would detract from the design and feel of the knife. I prefer a well made back lock on a folding knife. I also don't see the need for the various quick opening systems either. The ...

Re: Attitudes towards craftsmen

My Delica is a product of the industrial revolution, mass produced in another country, shipped in quantity to my country and bought from a virtual store with a phone where no actual money changes hands. I have a quality knife. If I had engaged a craftsman to make it I could not afford it. That is a ...

I like the "edge philosophy". Being an anthropologist by degree if not occupation, I have long been interested in early man (hominid) studies in which our ancestors abilities to make tools was a critical part of our survival. Cutting and scraping edges were the first man made tools and the...

On the Road(ie)

Wanting a Spyderco for CC (constant carry) to compliment one of my other Spydercos and looking for something different, I jumped on a gray Roadie last night. Should be here by Friday. I am intrigued and interested in the knife's radical design and the fact that is has no lock or pocket clip. I will ...

Re: Ebay seller flipping Stepped Blue Titanium Chaparral's that he got for $19 each

Wasn't arguing morals as a statistical exercise. Don't know where you got that. The history of philosophy and science adequately demonstrate that morals are culturally determined, and must be understood in their historical context. Absolute morals don't hold up culturally or historically. I'd love t...

Re: Attitudes towards craftsmen

People are all too happy to pay $100 for a pair of sneakers, knowing that they cost less than $20 and that most of the money goes to the CEO of Nike. People are all too happy to pay for cable service, which costs the company nothing actually, and most of the money goes to the CEO of Comcast. People...
