First Byrd - Robin G-10

Hello All,

I just picked up my first Byrd - a G-10 Robin Plain Edge. Very sharp out of the box, nice ergos and impressive fit & finish, especially at the price point (under $20). I particularly like the detail on the back spacer.

Looks like another winner.

Does anyone have an FRN version yet ...

Hello,

I like the Meerkat, especially the deep carry wire clip. One thing that I have noticed on all of mine (I have owned three and purchased a few others for gifts) is that the frn scale on the non-lock side has some play (i.e., it moves when you release the lock by pushing on the other scale). I ...

New and Used

Hello All,

As much as I enjoy opening up a brand spanking new Spydie (or other brand), I seem to get particular satisfaction out of finding a used knife, and "bringing it back to life" so to speak, with a good cleaning, sharpening, etc. These "adopted" or "pre-distressed" ones often get a lot of ...

Thanks to all for the comments/advice.

Deacon, I saw the Kiwi SS with the lanyard in your photos (super collection!). I don't really have trouble with one hand opening; rather, it's the overall slickness of the scales that I'm talking about. When it comes to knives, I'm probably more into the ...

Kiwi Musings

Hello All,

This little Spydie had intrigued me for awhile, but I resisted getting one, as I'm not particularly fond of metal scales. For my uses, I tend to prefer the smaller Spydies, and the size, shape and wharncliffe blade of the Kiwi looked interesting. Well, I recently purchased a SS Kiwi and ...

My 2 cents:

As a fan of lighter and "grippier" scales, I would especially like to see a Kopa, but even more so, a Kiwi or Navigator II, in FRN or G10.

Joe

More Solo info

The Solo Button Lock (or "Solo 5") is an interesting piece. It's more utilitarian than the micarta scale versions, but with G10 scales and AUS10 steel, it's worth a look. Very nice blade size and shape (though I wish it were not a combo edge). I like to carry it when I feel like something in between ...

Sal Discusses Solo

I've posted this in another thread here, but here's a BF thread from 1999 where Sal discusses the Solo line history.

Worth a look

I just got two Aluminum (Black) PE Salsas on closeout last week. I was interested mainly in the compression lock since I've never used one before. The lock is intriguing, although in both examples the lock is a bit difficult to disengage (this may be because the knives are new, but I don't really ...

I have them both and like them both (they alternate, with others, as an EDC for me).

As others have said, the Dragonfly FRN is super light, while the Meerkat is heavier (but not truly heavy) and has a more ergonomic handle. The wire clip on the Meerkat, in my opinion, is much better than the FRN ...

Steel Type for Lockbar / Liner , etc.

Hello all,

A recent discussion on one of the forums (I think it was BF) about the wear properties of liner locks got me thinking about what type of steel is used in lockbars, liners etc (this may be a basic question to those who are experienced in folder construction - I certainly am not :rolleyes ...

Thanks - I have noticed this (and I have read a similar comment on BF as well).

What I see you have to do is release the button as soon as the liner disengages and the blade is closing. If you don't, the bar attached to the button (which pushes the liner out of the way) may get in the way of the ...
