Calling it a quarantine in the thread title made me think of... Byrd Flu.

Thanks, it seemed reasonable that adding the city was a way of a maker differentiating themselves from others in the same country. I have a Cat made in Taiwan and had a Chaparral made in Taichung Taiwan and I noticed the feel of blade deployment and locking was almost identical, just a bit stiffer ...

If it says "Japan" or "Taiwan" on the blade...

Does that mean it's a different factory than Seki-City or Taichung?

That's a great thread, thanks for the link!

That makes sense Deacon and no one can question the beauty of the seamless 3 piece steel block along the back of teh Chaparral. I imagine it's pretty hard to give a flat steel edge a mirror polish and still maintain the sharp corners and edges. The top ...

Thx Mattman, I'll try to find that thread, I figured there must be some discussion about this. I understand that perfect corners, sharp crisp edges are a measure of the quality of the work. The sharpness of the edges on the Chaparral however, to me, felt unfinished. It felt like the liners were ...

I thought of that but decided not to do it, to just return the knife instead.

I like it. What would that blade profile be? A pot-bellied sheep's foot maybe?

The final resolution of my Chaparral saga; The new one was much easier to close, the blade and lock are both a lot smoother/easier than the old one. The fit and finish is impeccable and I noticed only a slight grittiness in the pivot which went away after some oil and a couple hours of opening and ...

Welcome, Jeremy and Eyewall! So, what knives do y'all have? :)

I'm not a collector or much of an enthusiast, I'm more like a victim of gadget lust. I have 9 knives at the moment but one is going back. Six (soon to be 5) are Spyderco. Knife cravings are fairly new for me, I blame my son who has ...

Greetings from another new member Jeremy, I only got welcomed here a couple days ago myself. Seems like a friendly bunch. This is definitely the place for all things Spyderco.

Here's an update - I am getting a replacement for the Chaparral. It should be here next week. I got a Cat G10 and a Persistence yesterday and realized the Cat is a perfect replacement for the Chaparral for grittier use like hiking or camping. I'm sorry I missed the short run of CF S30V Cats, but ...

Thanks Sal, I really appreciate that. I'll find out tomorrow if I can exchange the Chaparral. I doubt it will be a problem. I'm getting a G10 Cat tomorrow and a Persistence. I was thinking the Cat might replace the Chaparral but I think the Chaparral has too many qualities that I would miss. If I ...

Compared to both of yours my Chaparral is obviously flawed. I'll need to decide where to go from here, it's too expensive for me to keep if I'm not going to use it and I'm a little leery of trying another one. I guess one more shot is worth it though, I can't think of anything that fits as well for ...

I should add, I've probably opened and closed this thing a few hundred times in the last couple of days. I've been hoping it would loosen up from use but it hasn't, it's as tight as the day it arrived (the lock, the blade is a bit smoother). I'm picking up a Cat G10 tomorrow to feed my Spyderco ...

Arty, did you modify or adjust your Chaparrals in any way? The one I have is so tight that I can barely get it to release the blade when it's locked, even using two hands.

Thanks for all the replies. I actually did try the lock bar pivot screw Jack, that was why I made it un-put-together in the first place, I had seen the thread from last year where this was mentioned, I believe by you. I did not remove the blade from its pivot because I didn't want to deal with the ...

Chaparral lock too stiff

I've been lurking (learning) for a while and joined because I have a question I couldn't find addressed in another thread, so my first post is about a problem. I recently bought a Chaparral and the lock is so tight I can't close the blade without a certain amount of pain and a disfigured thumb. The ...
