A Newbie asks: Tip-up vs. Tip-down carry
Probably digging up a very dead and well beaten horse: Why are some Spydies designed for tip-up only carry, others tip-down only, and some are either/or? I like to carry mine tip up, left hand, front pocket. It seems the most natural way to go for drawing and opening for me, but I'm not an MBC, LEO ...

C-44 Revival - I'd Buy One!!
Yes, I definitely agree with all of the above - the C-44 is awesome, and I too would love to see a new one, maybe a sprint run? I had one years ago, but I sold it. :( I think it had a right-hand only pocket clip, and I'm left-handed, so maybe the new one could have a left/right/up/down clip, like th...

Byrd Wings vs. Large Dyad?
Hi Y'all, Apologies if someone has already done this and I missed it - it's a pretty obvious idea. If so maybe they could direct me to the thread. :o Has anyone compared the new Byrd Wings to the Large Dyad, in ergonomics, blade cutting performance/edge geometry, etc.? The Wings looks like one hellu...

Caly3 SE's on Closeout from Spyderco
I'm in the same quandry about whether the Caly3 would be better in SE or PE, especially since the SE is now on closeout pricing from Spyderco! The consensus in this thread seems to be favoring the PE for this knife. Is this due to the Caly3's flat ground leaf blade specifically, or to the knife's si...

Temperance 2 Price Tag
I'm pretty excited by the photos of the Temperance 2 - I liked the original Temperance, and think the new design looks more practical / outdoorsy somehow - maybe it's the sweep at the tip of the edge. Thank for bringing it back! :) Knowing that it's made by Seki is an attractive selling point - you ...

Thanks - helpful info on SE in H1 vs. VG-10, ZDP-189
Thanks a bunch! I've heard of work hardening in other steel tools, and it makes sense in a serrated knife edge too. Interesting that the H1 apparently work hardens more than VG-10 in a Spyderedge. Tooth chipping in a ZDP-189 Spyderedge should be expected I guess, as a trade off for it's many good qu...

Thanks - Good food for thought on SE
Thanks,
All of the above info is just what I needed - maybe I will try the Pacific Salt in H1 instead - good call. :)
How does H1 compare to say, VG-10, in edge retention vs. ease of sharpening? I like what I've gotten with VG-10. :)
Thanks,
Doug

ZDP-189 or Other in Spyderedge - Your Thoughts?
Hi, I'm considering buying an Endura 4 in ZDP Spyderedge (my first Spyderedge), and was wondering what your thoughts / experiences are with this combination. Will the high edge retention of the ZDP combined with the Spyderedge render sharpening almost unnecessary, or if not, will it be possible to s...

There was some past thread about this, and I think the end consensus was to pour in some epoxy or plastic type material. EDIT: Found the thread , but it looks like that was just my consensus... :o Thanks for the link Cobrajoe - I read that old thread - has anyone tried pouring them in as you sugges...

Stretch: Kraton Insert Replacements, Full Spyderedge?
My Stretch is one of the nicest knives I've ever owned - terrific design for comfort of carry, feel, and utility. Plus I like how it looks. :) The kraton inserts peeled though, and shredded somewhat from being pulled out of the pocket, and after supergluing them a few times I finally peeled them out...

Respectfully Agree
What you and I have really come to appreciate about the big Dyad as a few other hard core followers have discovered is it's overall ability to do just about any cutting chore imaginable. It's a knife that's ahead of it's time and it's certainly not for everyone. This describes the greatness of this...

I suppose that could happen if you're sharpening right into the edge. Maybe try doing a few going the other way a few times (instead of a cutting motion, go the opposite way: up instead of down). Interesting thought, THG - you might be onto something. Like starting a sawcut by pulling the saw edge ...

My guess is you were using way too much pressure. You just want to glide the blade along the stone, rather than pressing like you're really trying to take a slice off it. Thanks Paul, You're right about using diamond sharpeners with a light touch. Spyderco's instructions say to take it easy also, s...

C44 Dyad isn't for lefties
Hi, I had one of these a few years ago, and I sold it - I think because the knife was right-handed, and I'm not. That is, when the blades are closed, the way they overlap in the handle the blade you want to open with the thumbhole is under the other blade, if you're holding it left-handed. Small pri...

Sharpmaker: Maintenance? Diamond Rods?
Hi everyone, I've owned a Sharpmaker for about 6 years, and love how it works! I have two questions: 1. Do the ceramic rods need to be cleaned? What's the best way? Do they wear out? 2. I had a set of #204 diamond rods, but they seemed awfully coarse, and didn't seem to work well. The knife would ca...

Manix 2 Blade Steel?
Hi Paul,
Excellent review. I noticed in your photos on a different page that the blade on the Manix 2 is made from 154 CM. Is that what Spyderco will be using on the normal production? If so, your thoughts on this?
Thanks, Doug

H1 Dive knife from Benchmade, Spyderco
I've gone diving in Maine, and in Mexico. Mexico is better. My current dive knife is a Benchmade H20, made with a yellow handle, a full tang H1 steel blade, and a great sheath. The only trouble is it's a little small, so if you have large hands or if you're wearing mitts in cold water, like in Maine...

The Delica and Endura - A Newbie's Thoughts
Ok, here I go with my first post, so cut me some slack if needed, OK? ( Is there an initiation?? ) :D I recently bought an all black E4 FRN saber grind, in the deluded notion of carrying just ONE knife that could do it all. (What was I thinking?) My reason for that choice was simple - I am a fan of ...
