Hands down the Mariner Salt. Still kicking myself for not buying a second one before they discontinued them as my current one has taken a beating.

Re: Spyderco Assist vs Rescue 3?

Hi guys,

A question that's plagued me for years now, but which I never thought to ask about on the forum:

What are the differences between the Assist and the Rescue 3? To the untrained eye, there is quite a bit of overlap here: serrated sheepsfoot blade, similar size & length, FRN handle, etc ...

Re: How about that H1 Assist??

I am a firefighter and picked up the Assist to keep in my bunker coat.

The whistle is a nice feature, and is pretty loud. It is incorporated into the FRN, but is not a molded in part. The only downside is that you have to blow into is just right at the right angle for it to work. It would work in a ...

Re: Spyderco Knives in Australia, Tasmania, and NZ?

Spyderco knives are relatively rare here in NZ. I don't think I have ever seen one in a store, but some of the online stores here carry them. I personally carry a Sage 2 everyday. Most of the people who use knives a lot (like farmers) use fixed blades in a belt sheath opposed to folders for the most ...

Having spent a lot of time one the wildland firelines I recommend Nicks & Whites boots. Nothing better when it comes to work boots and for those that spend a lot of time on their feet. I was also in the Army years ago and these boots where infinitely better than any military boots. Expensive - but ...

Hey at least the people of NYC are safe now from the scary knife collectors who would have no doubt used those knives to attack little old ladies, puppies, and babies.

Please correct me if i'm wrong in any way shape or form but:

Doesn't spyderco offer to sharpen your blade for free as long as you pay S&H? If this isn't the case, then i am confused. Easy, effective, and then you know just how useful the customer service over here is.

Thanks,

-Drew

I've found that a wharny style blade is best for me. I don't like a lot of belly on a blade, and for cutting cardboard and most day to day chores, I don't find belly necessary.

I had Krein reprofile and regrind an Atlantic Salt. It's now the perfect EDC knife, and it cuts everything with ease ...

I am moved to NZ with my wife from Alaska a little over a year ago now. We are now permanent residents here so we will be staying for quite a while now.

I have several Lock back knives , and pretty much all of them have at least some vertical blade play. I personally don't think it's a problem until the blade can be moved a substantial amount.

Maybe I just got lucky with mine.

I have a Mariner Salt that has just a hint of slack in it now but ...

Some sort of sharpening equipment is a key item if you own knives of any type. The easiest method to keep a knife sharp is to not let it get extremely dull by regular sharpening.

The Sharpmaker is a very popular method not only because this is a Spyderco forum but because it works and you see it ...

I have both a Salt 1 and a Pacific Salt and both have absolutely zero play in any direction and they have been used a fair amount. While a certain amount of play is not really an issue on factory built knives, if you are feel it while cutting I would say you may have a problem. That is my "line in ...

I am going to be all alone on this one.......

I am going to have to go with the wharncliffe/Mariner blade style as most useful. It may not be the most versatile for the majority of people but it is the most useful and versatile style blade for the majority of stuff I use a knife for.

Even the catalog pictures show it as only tip-down. Good to hear that it may be wrong as I really prefer the tip-up.

The tip-down carry tends to tear up my pants as the hinged area gradually abrades fabric when I move around.

Mariner Salt carry option changes

I was thinking about picking up a second Mariner Salt and noticed they are advertised as tip down carry only. The one I have (purchased a few years ago) is drilled for both tip up and down.

Has anyone handled a new one recently that can confirm this change?

Well I have the Sharpmaker out on the table and putting these suggestions to work. Based on what is said so far, I think part of the problem is that I am not taking off the burr by hitting the opposite side of the serration enough to completely remove it. I have been under the impression if you ...
