Re: Who's making scales?

I just finished up a pair of Purple Heartwood scales for my SPY27 straight spine mule. Here are some progress pics: https://i.imgur.com/nbIqtZ8.jpg I start with some very crudely cut blanks from a hand carpenter saw, and then a coping saw. If I was better at using a coping saw, and could mount the s...

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

I recently took several Mules and "pinned" them together using some 3/16" chicago pivot barrels. Basically I suspected that my ZDP-189 (seconds sale) was off in terms of it's handle dimensions from my other Mules. I pinned it together with a SPY *2, M398, and Rex76, then felt along al...

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

Thanks guys - I just ordered a set. I bought two of the Mule Team AEB-L's, planning on two designs with some purpleheart I've had for a while. But then I watched Xplorer's detailed instructions on how to create Mule Team scales, and realized I'm out of my league. I'll still give it a go on one of t...

Re: Orange County, California legal blade limit?

I tried looking it up for you, and the most specific I could find was a really useless article on CalGuns. I searched the OC civil code , and the only results for “knife” were about mobile food service. It seems like there are no specific OC regulations, so I would feel fine following California st...

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

Out of interest, does quality control testing get done at Golden to make sure that the heat treatment instructions were followed? I guess my question applies to all offshore manufacturing, whether Japanese, Taiwanese or Italian. And I assume that sharing HT information means an acceptance that it m...

We chased it down because you asked for it. We gave the maker Shawn's heat treat. Be sure to let us know what you think? sal Interesting, more collaboration with Shawn Houston? Or another Shawn? I wasn't aware that there were other collaborations outside of the 15v. Very cool! Does anyone know abou...

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

Woo! New Mule!! I can't wait to try a high-toughness Mule. Hopefully I can get a few and not be afraid to really test them hard. Can't wait get this and really compare/contrast with the Rex76 and M398.

Re: All steels should have a Mule!

People want all these mules (and I'm certainly in that camp). Spyderco has a lot on their plate and also has a Mule pipeline on their plate that covers the foreseeable future. Has the forum ever considered organizing with a smaller shop who would take on a kickstarter/indiegogo style mule project? I...

Re: Show your Mule

https://i.imgur.com/BsIBmYU.jpg Latest scales in Wenge, finally got them on to a Mule. This wood is very hard to work with compared to Oak! Took way longer than expected to get the screw holes and pins to actually fit. My drilling is not precise enough yet -_- The screws are actually hiding a lot o...

Re: 15V Shaman!

My brief experience with Ultem is that it has impressive strength to weight ratio and rigidity for a plastic material. It does take scuffs and dings if you drop it or run into abrasives, and it doesn't hide them as well as maybe textured G10. It has a bunch of other neat properties (temperature resi...

I think we will see lots of Magnacut kitchen knife options popping up over the next five years, from at least. a dozen factories.
Bradford Knives did a run of their culinary line in magnacut. Not nearly factory production quantities, but it's a start!

Re: Which Past Mule Teams Would You Like to See Repeated?

I'd love to see a bunch of Mule repeats, particularly of older and less common steels (they seem incredibly hard to pick up on the secondary). From the perspective of the Mule project, there doesn't seem to be a point. For example, I want an LC200N mule for sure. Probably multiples to test and some ...

I like to use grapefruit and slice into big chunks which then get skewered together Grapefruit?!?! :squinting-tongue I thought I was going to have to buy hydrochloric acid, or gun bluing agent (and end up on some weird list). Re: MT33 CPM REX 76 -First Impressions, Performance, and Testing Thread

Spent a couple solid hours whittling away at African Wenge with my Rex 76. Tried CPM 20CV and M398 at this, and both of those steels didn't hold up for very long before the edge rolled or it just wouldn't bite easily. The effort ramped up very quickly. Rex76, tho' is a BOSS when it comes to maintain...

Re: Show your Mule

More wooden scales action!

Started with Birch, then made a set of White Oak from floorboards, and now I've just finished off a pair of Wenge. These things nearly killed me (never worked with such hardwood!), but I'm oiling/waxing them a bit before mounting them up.

So, if someone were to attempt this, what would you use to apply a forced black rust patina to Rex76?

Re: Show your Mule

What kind of wax is Bruce paste wax? I'm going to try to finish these with beeswax and mineral oil like my Birch set. I'm not certain how that's going to work with these larger grain voids.

Re: Using standard wood scale sizes for Mule

So, I take it the 1.5" wide is not quite large enough for your scale pattern? Nice creative solution to that problem! You are also getting some exquisite book-matched grain patterns in there as well. Are the red/blue lines going in as liners under the wood, or across the middle of the divide be...

Finishing up a pair of White Oak handles made from left over floorboards from the renovation (we have like 100 sq ft left). Better not drop this knife, I'll never find it again! :winking-tongue
